We are kicking off our month of celebrating those unsung heroes... mothers (of all kinds - we're inclusive here!). I couldn't find a lot about Lou Xiaoying, but what I did touched my heart. A poor, struggling women who rummaged through garbage found the most precious treasure of all: discarded children.

This week's woman was known by many names: Mama Africa, the Empress of the African Song, and Zenzi (her African name that was a gift from her mother). The world would come to know her as Miriam Makeba... and they would LOVE her talent and positive spirit. At least, until she starting using her voice to directly criticize the apartheid government of her home country of South Africa.

The amazing woman that we're talking about this week contributed to cinema not as a director, writer, or actor... but as a concept artist for animation. Mary Blair became an influential artist for the Disney movies Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella and Peter Pan (among others). Her unique art is beautiful and bright. If you've ever visited any of the Disney Theme Parks around the world, you've probably seen some of her work.

Over the last couple of episodes we've talked about how hard it was to be a woman in Hollywood. This week, we're going to learn about a woman who had an additional hurdle to overcome. Anna May Wong, a Chinese-American young woman dreamed her whole life of being a moviestar. With her focus, and a little bit of luck, she found herself on the silver screen... but the roles that she was being offered were offensive and didn't allow her to celebrate her heritage. Join me this week to meet the first Hollywood Movie Star! Encouraged by her mother to go into theater acting to help support her family when she was a little girl, Mary found that she loved to be on stage & enjoyed performing. Working her way through traveling stage troops and Broadway, Mary decided to try her talent at film. The camera LOVED her... and so did her audiences. Her contributions to the film industry are sometimes overlooked (she was just an "actress" after all), but when we learn her story we can see that she had a passion and understanding that far exceeded what was captured on film.
