Alice was the most eccentric first daughter to EVER enter the White House. She lived her life on her own terms, and the world loved to watch her do it. She was just as strong-willed and outspoken as her father, who famously said, "I can do one of two things. I can be President of the United States OR I can control Alice. I cannot do both." Join me to learn a little bit about Alice's life and maybe be inspired to care just a little bit less about what others think of you.

Zitkala-Sa was stripped of all outward appearance of her Native American Heritage and Culture when she arrived at the White's Manual Labor Institute: her clothing, hair, language and name. She knew, though, that no one could strip her of what she held inside. This talented writer, musician and fierce advocate never stopped fighting for others to see the value in Native Americans. Her hard work in uniting many different tribes in common goals helped significantly to the passing of the 1924 Federal Indian Citizenship Act.

This week we will be talking about the sister of a prominent Chihenne Chiricahua Apache chief. According to her brother, she was "his right hand... strong as a man, braver than most, and cunning in strategy... a shield to her people."

Lozen had many talents and gifts that made her a powerful and brave strategist and warrior. She had bravery that allowed her to take on responsibilities that seemed impossible. She had a love for her people and their land that came before any consideration of her personal well-being.
