  • Hawkeye History Podcast: Brandon Myers

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa continues solidifying itself as Tight End U. Former Hawkeye George Kittle is coming off a historic season with the San Francisco 49ers. T.J. Hockenson and Noah Fant are entering the league as the first teammates at the position ever to be picked in the first round of the same NFL Draft.

Former Iowa tight end Brandon Myers feels like that trio has raised Iowa’s profile at the spot. Even he is amazed at their high level of talent.

Hawkeye fans old enough to remember understand Myers’ contributions to the program’s tight end lineage. His catches in the 2008 upset of Penn State at Kinnick Stadium rank up there with some of the most clutch during the coach Kirk Ferentz Era.

Myers, who played at small-school Iowa, Prairie City-Monroe High and grew up on a farm, grabbed a Hawkeye scholarship late in the process and wrestled with his decision to decommit from Northern Iowa to accept it. After a successful run in Iowa City, he played eight seasons in the NFL.

We caught up with Myers, who now lives in Arizona with his wife and young child, in our latest Hawkeye History podcast. He talked about how he ended up at Iowa, his time there, his NFL career and more.

  • Hawkeye History Podcast: Tangela Smith

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Megan Gustafson captured the imaginations of young girls throughout the Iowa fan base with her exploits the last several seasons. The Hawkeye center won the Big Ten’s Player of the Year Award last winter in dominating fashion.

On Senior Day in March, a Northwestern assistant sat on the bench in Carver-Hawkeye Arena having been entrusted with her team’s scouting report on how to stop Gustafson. Thirty four points and 12 rebounds later, the coach understood what it was like when she had dominated opponents on the same court 20 years earlier.

Tangela Smith excited the Hawkeye faithful when she won the conference player of the year award in 1998. Opposing teams were preparing to stop the unstoppable then as well.

We caught up with Smith for our latest Hawkeye History Podcast. The Chicago native, who will be inducted into the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame next month, dished on Gustafson, her time at Iowa, her 15-year WNBA career and playing professionally all over the world.

  • Hawkeye History Podcast: Jeff Horner

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The door was left open a crack during the late 1990s. Iowa State was looking to slip through it.

The Hawkeyes’ future was unknown at the time. Dr. Tom Davis’ contract had not renewed and a new coach had not been hired.

Cyclone coach Larry Eustachy used the opportunity to court Mason City point guard Jeff Horner, despite him growing up an avid Iowa fan. The basketball phenom really liked what he saw and heard on an unofficial visit to Ames.

What would have become a nightmare for Iowa having already lost in-state stars Kirk Hinrich and Nick Collison to Kansas turned fond memories. Steve Alford replaced Davis and corralled Horner shortly after his arrival in Iowa City.

Horner went on to lead the Hawkeyes to two NCAA Tournaments and a Big Ten Tournament title. He’s their all-time assists leader (612) and is second in three-pointers made (262).

We caught up with Horner recently for the Hawkeye History podcast, on which he told stories about being recruited by ISU, playing for Alford, living through the Pierre Pierce arrests, studying Pornography at Iowa (what?) and much more.

Please give it a listen. You won’t be disappointed.
