Tuskegee University’s dress code has sparked a larger conversation about professionalism, respectability politics and how much control colleges should exercise over what students wear. Randall Barnes and Kiya Wimbush-Robinson examine the university’s restrictions on bonnets, durags, sagging pants, sleepwear and other attire.

They discuss whether formal rules are necessary, how HBCU students already understand the difference between attending class and entering professional settings, and why student perspectives should remain at the center of the debate.

The conversation also addresses generational criticism of college students and Randall’s frustration with HBCU media allowing stories involving HBCUs to “break containment” before framing the discussion for itself.
