Something I have heard off and on over the last 25 years since entering the seminary is, ‘Thank you for your sacrifice’. Every vocation has sacrafice built into it because every vocation is about loving the other. The journey for all of us is to live yes, yes. To say yes to the Lord and not to change our minds but that is a life long process that requires humility, and transformation that comes from the sacraments to encourage us on that journey.
Today’s gospel is about reconciliation and the power of praying with others for whatever concerns may weigh deeply on our hearts. It makes me reflect on how I have been dealing with the increasing tensions that have been building in our world over covid, racial, economic and political divides. Everything become so toxic, but tuning it all out like an Ostrich sticking its head in the sand is not what Jesus would have us do.
The mother of all rebukes, “Get behind me Satan!”… where did that come from?
22 Sunday 2020 - Where Did That Come From

When my younger brother graduated from Pensacola flight school eventually to become an aviator for the USMC he got his ’Call Sign’. In the Gospel today Jesus changes Simon‘s name to Peter, something of a spiritual Call Sign. Fr. Herbert Alphonso SJ wrote a short book “Discovering your Personal Vocation’, in short, to discover the call sign God has for each of us. Let’s turn the question around and ask Jesus, “Who do you say that I am?” To discover that name is a game changer for the rest of your life!
