Our understanding of trauma and its effects on people is clearer than it was just a few years ago. One key thing we’ve learned, trauma is much more common than we once thought. For example, many people with unresolved trauma will turn to drugs or alcohol to numb themselves to it—and they get addicted in the process. Many other addictions follow, besides drugs and alcohol. 
75 percent of the female patients we see report a traumatic event in their past. For our male patients, it’s around 50 percent. Those are astounding numbers!
Trauma is an emotional response to a terrible event such as an accident, natural disaster, emotional or physical abuse, extreme poverty, chronic social isolation, or war. 
It’s a difficult combination to untangle, but we may be getting a handle on it.
There’s power in numbers: Group therapy sessions can be quite helpful for allowing people to work through their trauma issues. People hear others’ stories, and they see similarities. They realize they aren’t alone in what they experienced. They feel validated that it was wrong and that it wasn’t their fault. It can be very impactful and liberating when a therapist or counselor helps them realize all that. But hearing it from someone who has experienced the same can be even more powerful.

TRAUMA IS AN EMOTIONAL response that occurs when you experience a distressing event, Sometimes, trauma gets passed down through families.  Generational trauma isn’t a diagnosable mental health disorder, but it can nonetheless manifest in many different ways and affect individuals and families as a whole for a very long time.
Trauma refers to stress that’s so overwhelming and severe that it impacts your emotional, mental, physical, spiritual, and other parts of your well-being, “Trauma is individualistic and is not confined by ethnicity or socioeconomic status. Therefore, anyone can experience generational trauma."
Very little attention has been paid to how structural racism and its consequences may contribute to the intergenerational transmission of depression.  
Cumulative trauma is the idea of “historical trauma,” which refers to intergenerational trauma experienced by a group of individuals who have been systematically oppressed in previous generations. 
Generational trauma can affect people in different ways. As we look at these 17 signs of generational trauma, know that action should be directed toward policies that dismantle structurally racist institutions and practices, including a mental health care system that is equitable and generate knowledge to understand the intergenerational course of depression among historically racially and ethnically minoritized families.

Most people know firsthand that sleep affects their mental state. The brain activity fluctuates during sleep, increasing and decreasing during different sleep that make up the sleep cycle.

When people think of abuse, it tends to be something physical that leaves visible marks. Yet, emotional abuse leaves invisible wounds that are just as damaging.
Emotional abuse, sometimes called psychological abuse, is a pattern of behaviors where one person subjects another person to nonphysical acts that harm another person's overall ability to function and their mental well-being.  A variety of types of emotional abuse have been identified. 

• Intimidations and terrorization.
• Humiliation and degradation.
• Exploitation.
• Harassment.
• Rejection and withholding of affection.
• Isolation.
• Excessive control.
• Verbal abuse. 

Emotional abuse is a type of trauma.  Counselling and therapy can help, in fact it's recommended. Some people try self-care which is fine, it's also an important tool in healing from an abusive relationship. A counselor or therapist can help victims process their traumatic experiences and begin the process of healing. Working with mental health professionals, counselors, can help you acknowledge the abuse, rebuild your sense of self, learn how to develop self-compassion, and recognize what healthy relationships look like.

it's helpful for you to be familiar with the signs of cutting. Cutting can become a dangerous habit that’s hard to stop without help. Unfortunately, most teens try to hide cutting, so signs may not be obvious. 
Try not to overreact if you think your teen is cutting. We know it’s upsetting, but cutting and self-harm are signs teens aren’t coping well with stress and other emotions.
Ask about the cuts. Teens typically try to hide cutting due to shame and embarrassment. Even so, most teens are relieved when their secret is exposed. If you notice cuts or scars on your teen’s body, don’t be afraid to ask about them.
Try to be patient. It may take time to completely stop cutting. Set a good example. Remember, your teen looks to you as an example of how to handle challenging emotions and stress. by all means, seek help for your family.
