Such a great episode with Ashley Rawlins, Pelvic Floor Therapist
Here are five key takeaways from the podcast episode on pelvic floor therapy and its relevance during perimenopause and menopause:
Pelvic Floor Therapy Addresses Multiple Aspects: Pelvic floor therapy focuses on a specific area of the body—the pelvic floor—which comprises muscles supporting bowel, bladder, and sexual functions. The therapy is holistic, considering the entire body and its history.
Impact of Menopause on Pelvic Health: Menopause brings about significant changes in the body, affecting bone health, cardiovascular health, neurologic health, and reproductive health. Estrogen levels decrease, impacting pelvic floor tissues, muscles, and blood flow. These changes may lead to symptoms like urinary incontinence, constipation, and sexual dysfunction.
Symptoms and Conditions Treated: Pelvic floor therapy addresses symptoms such as bladder leakage, stress incontinence, urgency incontinence, constipation, and sexual changes. These symptoms can be signs of pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, and therapy aims to improve these conditions through evidence-based treatments.
Holistic and Individualized Approach: Pelvic floor therapy takes a holistic approach, recognizing that pelvic health is connected to various aspects of a person's life, including trauma, relationships, pain, and medical complications. The treatment is individualized, considering the unique needs and symptoms of each person.
Empowerment and Hope: The podcast emphasizes that menopause should be reframed as a positive and empowering experience. Pelvic floor therapy provides evidence-based treatments, offering hope and solutions to individuals experiencing pelvic health issues. It encourages a proactive approach to managing and improving symptoms.
