Edward Freeman is an author, public speaker and biologist, who graduated from Georgia Tech with a degrees in Biology and Applied Language and Intercultural studies and is currently seeking his Masters degree from Brown University in Bio Tech ! We not only discuss his academic and social journey through GT but he also recalls what led him to the decision to pursue his Masters degree and his experience at Brown university so far. He shares his passion for cell and gene therapy while encouraging the audience to go for opportunities even when they may seem far away, because with hard work and faith, they may be closer than you think! 

In this episode, Edward reminds us of the importance of taking up our space, self-empowerment and knowing our worth !

BJ is a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology with degrees in Biochemistry and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. From Nigeria to Canada to Georgia, BJ shares his experience as a transfer student and the hard work it took to break bad study habits in an effort to be successful at Tech.

He shares his experience as a ChBE student, the type of content he learned and the different applications of ChBE.

We discuss misconceptions about the major, his favorite classes, and how Tech grew him as a person.

As I like to say…it was the best of times and it was the worst of times, but boy was it a time!  And in this episode, Amelia and I get into those times!

I’m joined by Amelia Smith, a GT grad with degrees in Biomedical Engineering and a minor in Social Justice. Not only did Amelia and I go to the same elementary, middle and high school, but we also went to GT together as well !

Amelia and I discuss what experiences led her to Biomedical engineering and how her favorite classes help her become a better medical drug consumer.

She talks about some of her favorite involvements,  including her sorority and NSBE. We also discuss how she could’ve balanced her responsibilities a bit differently and what she thinks college taught her about herself. Throughout this episode, Amelia reflects on what it was like finding space as a black woman on Tech's campus.

Janelle Tanner is a Computer Scientist and Georgia Tech graduate from Columbus, Ohio. Though she didn’t know anything about C.S until late in high school, “Girls Who Code” introduced Janelle to a whole new world. She talks about the ability to be creative within C.S and her interest in the intersection of media and computer science during her academic journey. We discuss the growing pains of adjusting to the different learning curves we face in school, in our careers and in everyday life. This episode reminds us that we shouldn’t be afraid to step into new opportunities just because they seem challenging! Challenges will come and there will be things we don’t know, but getting comfortable with trial and error helps us learn and grow!

This week I’m joined by Regan Morton, an Ohio State University graduate. During her time at OSU, she studied Materials Science and Engineering. In this episode, Regan gives an insightful and informative crash course on what MSE is, the type of content that she studied and the type of roles that are available! We discuss the interdisciplinary nature of MSE and some of the misconceptions people have about it! In her reflection of what college taught her about herself, she shares powerful gems of wisdom that ring true no matter what stage of life you are in !

Josslyn Lally graduated from Georgia Tech with degrees in Biomedical engineering and French. Throughout her time at Tech, she participated in several extracurricular activities and held many leadership positions. We discussed her interest in public health and how certain classes increased her awareness of the impact of things happening in her own community and the type of work she did as a biomed in undergrad. From the outside looking in, it seemed like Josslyn always had her classes and extracurriculars under control, but in this episode she shares the struggles faced, the importance of mentorship and the invaluable lessons she learned about the art of balance.

On this week’s episode, I am joined by special guest Jayna, who I met as my intern buddy! She has since graduated from Marquette with her degree in Mechanical Engineering and now works full time at GE Healthcare. 

She shares how she started her journey with the goal of being a dentist and how that shifted throughout their academic journey. We discuss the importance of internships, exposure and pushing through moments of doubt. She also reveals what super power she thinks mechanical engineers possess. 

Kemuel Russell is a Georgia Tech grad from the Virgin Islands with degrees in Biology, Psychology and Spanish. In this episode, he shares his atypical and unorthodox journey to studying biology at Tech along with his struggles and triumphs as a student. 

He discussed how he was able to build community in the biology space on Tech's campus, the resources he used to discover biology opportunities outside of Medical school and his unusual route to his first internship during COVID. 

As some who didn't get into his dream school, this episode is filled with lessons on why it's important to be confident in YOUR journey and to keep striving for your goals even after perceived failures. Because you never know how one “closed door” can lead you to the door you were looking for all along.

To kick off Season 3 of the Hear From a Student Podcast, I am joined by Alessandra Smith, a Georgia Tech grad with a degree in Environmental Engineering and minor in Sustainable Cities. This episode is a mini introduction to all things city planning and sustainability. 

Alessandra shares her past experiences as an undergrad student and her present experiences as a masters student at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, including how MIT has helped shape her as a confident, independent thinker as she seeks to innovate upon the existing social systems. 

She also discusses her passion for social equity and how thorough and thoughtful city planning can make a positive impact. 

This episode is filled with thought provoking discussions and reemphasizes the importance of breaking the status quo and thinking outside of the box. 

For the season final, I’m joined by a special guest, Dorsey Beckles! Dorsey is a GT graduate and computer engineer for Raytheon but this episode is all about this trek through Georgia Tech. He discusses how his curiosity led him to Computer Engineering and how his academic journey changed (both the good and bad) after his transfer from the University of West Georgia. He shared what his journey to overcoming imposter syndrome was like after transferring and the impact that ORS (The Opportunity Research Scholars Program) had on his development and his future overall. He also gives insight into how he prepared to move across the country after graduation.
