  • 018951 Marina Barrage

In 1987, Singapore's first Prime Minister Lee Kwan Yew conceptualized a freshwater dam to be built across the Marina Channel. 21 years later, on 31st October 2008, Singapore's 15th reservoir was opened.

The 350m long dam serves 3 purposes - water storage, flood control, and recreation. It took a year and a half for the seawater to be replaced by rainwater.

  • 628925 African Treetops

African Treetops at Jurong BirdPark is an aviary that recreates a rainforest canopy housing a lot of rather noisy birds from Africa.

In the center is a feeding tower; you can get a cup of food from the the park staff and the birds will eat right out of the cup in your hand, landing on your arms, shoulders, even your head. But be careful - they're curious creatures

  • 628925 Parrot Paradise

Parrots are legendary mimics, but like any performer, they need an audience to really perform. I came by early in the morning, before 9 am, one of the first visitors to the park, and strolling around Parrot Paradise, the macaws, cockatoos, and parrots were still warming up.

At full squawk, parrots can hit 155 decibels (louder than a rock concert!) so early morning is probably the best time to drop by and say hello.

When you think of birds that mimic sounds, you think of parrots. The humble hornbill certainly doesn't come to mind. However, did you know the trumpeter hornbill does a very convincing cat? Of all the sounds to make at a bird sanctuary...

  • 819666 Rain Vortex

At Jewel Changi Airport, the centerpiece is the 40m tall Rain Vortex, the largest and tallest indoor waterfall in the world. We recorded this artistic and mechanical marvel from the 5F via Canopy Bridge, at the 4F from a viewing deck, and at the 1F where the circular reflecting pool opens up to reveal the final 2 floors into the basement before pumps at B3 send the water back to the top.
