In this episode Keely and Jae interview Stace Parlen, LGBTQ counselor and trans activist, about the history behind the medicalization of trans bodies and how the gender binary system was created. Stace explains how this medicalization has had an impact on the current socio-political climate today around transgender and non-binary individuals. The goal of the Interrupting the Binary series is to discuss how we can help shift the framework to more than just a binary and create more space for people to self identify in different ways. Also discussed are issues such as cissexism, transphobia, and transmisogyny.
