  • ep 77 Gabrielle Tobin - For Math's Sake: Peer-to-Peer Videos and Math Packet Girl Scout Gold Award Project

    Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/

Gabrielle created For Math's Sake: Peer-to-Peer Videos and Math Packet to support math education in a virtual environment.

    From Gabrielle:

My Gold Award Project addressed the issue of improving math proficiency and content mastery (achieving a level necessary for the next grade level) for 6th Grade students in Georgia middle schools and beyond. Additionally, it addressed the impact of school closures, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, on students' ability to improve math proficiency and content mastery.

Since the age of ten, I have asked friends and family to forgo giving me birthday presents and instead provide school supplies, cash, or gift card donations to Lindley Sixth Grade Academy, a local public school.

I also established and registered a non- profit foundation, 40 Mustard Seeds, with the Georgia Secretary of State. The primary purpose of the foundation is to provide tools such as school supplies and tutoring in person or virtual in the area of math.

  • Ep 75 Molly McGarity Nurturing Nature Knowledge Girl Scout Gold Award Project

    Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/

Molly created Nurturing Nature Knowledge education program to encourage an interest in nature and the environment in kids.

Hi! My name is Molly McGarity. I am a Girl Scout Ambassador from Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson and a senior in High School.

I have been a Girl Scout since kindergarten, making 2021 my 13th year as a member! I have earned my bronze and silver award and I am so excited to be earning my Gold Award. I am a member of the Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson competitive canoe team and I have spent about half of the summers of my life at Camp Addisone Boyce. Being in Girl Scouts has allowed me to meet so many friends and try so many new things. It has also helped me realize how much I love nature and teaching people.

My experiences at Camp Addisone Boyce were a big inspiration behind this project, I wanted to create something to get kids outside and excited about nature! I was also inspired by my grandfather, Sidney Horenstein, who was an environmental educator and geologist. The passion I have found for the outdoors and the environment, combined with my love of working with kids pushed me to pursue this project.

In the future, I plan to become an environmental educator and continue sharing my passions with anyone who wants to listen! This project has solidified that this is the path that I want to take!

  • Rp 72 Jasmine Swainson - English library for a Japanese school Girl Scout Gold Award Project

    Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/

Jasmine created an English library for a Japanese school.

Hello my name is Jasmine Elaine Swainson. I was born in Bremerton, Washington at Naval hospital Bremerton. My dad William Swainson was active military and my mom was a hairstylist. We lived in Bremerton till I was 8 years old where I was very active in dance. I attended a Spanish immersion program at my school. At that time we moved to Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and I attended a 50/50 immersion school. In 7th grade my family and I moved to Sasebo, Japan. This is where my Girl Scout years began. As a cadet I earned my silver award by making a baby blanket and donated it to the Marine corps relief society. Some of the things I like about overseas Girl Scouts is we get to interact with the Japanese girl guides and I have made lots of friends, even if they move we stay in contact. Before the coronavirus pandemic hit the world I had started my project and I originally was going to do a therapeutic garden for the sailors and anyone who could go on base. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit I really searched for alternate options because there was no way to continue with my idea and there were other longevity issues. I then went to a Japanese school over the summer and saw that they had a small amount and limited reading level of English books in the library. With COVID shutting everything down and people being stuck at home deciding to clean and get rid of stuff I saw a way to help. I realized I could take old English books people on base we're trying to get rid of off their hands and clean and organize them and then donate them to the school to help expand their English library.

In honor of National Bullying Prevention Month we are replaying episode 55.

Abby created a cyberbullying education packet. She was a member of USA Girl Scouts Overseas, attending high school in Singapore and is now a member of the USA Girl Scouts Overseas Gold Award Committee.

More about Abby: I have been involved with Girl Scouts for 13 years as a girl member and now as an Adult Member, I am on the Gold Award committee for overseas. Throughout my time in middle school, I was a victim of cyberbullying. I never want anyone to go through what I went through, so I decided to create advisory lessons for the 6th grade Homebase program. The goal of my project is to raise awareness about cyberbullying in an effort to reduce it. For my Gold Award project, I created 5 lessons all about the importance of internet safety and the prevention of cyberbullying. Currently, I am enrolled at Florida Southern College where I study nursing and exercise science.

  • Ep 70 Ephemia Nicolakis - EcoOrthodox Girl Scout Gold Award Project

    Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/

Ephemia created Eco Orthodox to encourage her church to reduce the use of plastics and find more eco friendly options.

Ephemia Nicolakis is a second year student at Quinnipiac University in their 3+1 accelerated dual degree program double majoring in Graphic Design and Public Relations. She currently works as a Digital Platforms Assistant for Quinnipiac University's department of Integrated Marketing Communication, and is also the Social Media Manager for the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the USA. A new on-campus organization she recently joined is called Ability Media, an org directed to help individuals with disabilities showcase their talents through media and more! In her free time, Ephemia is a photographer for her photography business, ephemiamaria, based in Connecticut. She also loves to hang out with her sister and friends, travel, read, bake, and shop!

Ephemia was a Girl Scout starting in Kindergarten! Her favorite Girl Scout activities consisted of selling cookies and attending fun events. Her idea for her Gold Award project, EcoOrthodox, bloomed after she took a marine biology class her junior year of high school. In it she learned all about climate change and ocean pollution, as well as the single-use plastic problem, and wanted to find a solution for approaching the issue within her community. She noticed her church using tons of styrofoam and plastic containers during all of their events. Knowing the harm this does to not only us but the environment, Ephemia came up with EcoOrthodox.
