A central theme of the New Testament is to reveal to us the role of the Messiah to gather and unite as 12 tribes of Israel, and the New Testament is a detailed explanation for how that is going to happen. In Yeshua’s earthly ministry, the things that we read about him in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, while these are literal events, at the same time, they are prophetically foreshadowing his role to gather and unite the 12 tribes of Israel.

When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. John 11: 6

Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up. After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight. Hosea 6:2-3

The two days can represent 2,000 years. As we come into the “third day”, or the final 1,000 years when Yeshua rules/reigns, it begins with the time known as Jacob’s trouble. This is when Yeshua will gather and unite the 12 tribes of Israel.

But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel. Micah 5:2-3

These things said he: and after that he said unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleeps; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. John 11:11

Lazarus represents the exiles of Israel who are in spiritual slumber. In not realizing who the Lawgiver is, that it was Yeshua who gave the Torah at Mt Sinai, the exiles of Israel (Northern kingdom) are literally asleep. How is it prophesied that when the exiles of Israel are gathered, that they will be awakened out of their spiritual slumber?

Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. John 11:14

Yeshua is describing the situation with Lazarus literally, but spiritually, he is communicating that the nation of Israel is exiled to the nations of the world and they are likened unto being spiritually dead.

Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts. Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel. Ezekiel 37:11

The resurrection of Lazarus can be connected to the resurrection of the scattered dry bones described in Ezekiel 37. The resurrection of Lazarus and the resurrection of the bones is a picture of the end of the exile and the gathering and uniting of the 12 tribes of Israel.

In the literal events of Yeshua’s ministry, there is also prophetic proclamation about Yeshua’s role to gather and unite the 12 tribes of Israel which will be fulfilled at his second coming. Lazarus means “whom God helps.” Lazarus represents the exiles of Israel. Lazarus is from Bethany, which means “the house of the afflicted”. Mary and Martha are sisters who also live in Bethany. Northern Kingdom and Southern Kingdom are called sisters. (Ezekiel 23). They represent Judaism (Mary) and Christianity (Martha). The reason why Yeshua abode at that place for two days before leaving to go to Lazarus was that Yeshua was showing to us that after His first coming He would be returning 2000 years later to gather and unite the 12 tribes of Israel. The two days represents 2,000 years. (Psalm 90:4) The death of Lazarus prophetically foreshadows being in exile in the nations of the world. The resurrection of Lazarus represents the gathering of the exiles of Israel. This principle is hinted at in Hosea 6:1-2

Come, and let us return to the LORD;

For He has torn, but He will heal us;

He has stricken, but He will bind us up.

After two days He will revive us;

On the third day He will raise us up,

That we may live in His sight.

Returning to the Lord is returning to the Torah.

In the last session we saw that Yeshua is going to gather and unite the 12 tribes of Israel during the time known as Jacob’s trouble. This time is also known as the “third day” of Hosea 6: 2, also known as “the day of the Lord.” In order for this to happen, the exiles of Israel must be awakened out of their sleep. They must awaken to know that Yeshua is their Messiah, but they also must be awakened to the fact that Yeshua is the Lawgiver and that we express our faith in and love for Yeshua by following His Torah by the Holy Spirit.

In order for the exiles of Israel to return to the Torah of Yeshua, a change of heart must happen. The stony heart is this: if you believe Yeshua is the Messiah but you don’t have a heart for following His Torah. In John 11: 39, we read: “Yeshua said, “Take away the stone.” This removal of the stone represents the removal of the stony heart, to be replaced with a heart of flesh. A stony heart does not want to follow the Torah of Yeshua. How so?

But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the Torah, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets. Zech 7: 10-11

In the last session, we saw that in taking away the stone, this is prophetic of taking away the stony heart that does not want to follow the Torah. The new covenant (Jer. 31:31-33) takes away the heart of stone and gives us a heart of flesh so that the Torah is written upon our hearts. Will the blind eyes of the exiles of Israel be opened to that Yeshua is Messiah? Yes. Will the blind eyes of Chrisitianity be opened that if you believe Yeshua is the Messiah you need to follow the Torah? Yes. How do we know this? Yeshua made the prophetic proclamation and He rolled away the stone that was in front of Lazarus grave and then He is going to resurrect Lazarus. He did this literally then, but will do it again, prophetically for the “exiles of Israel” as a corporate resurrection.

And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said unto them, “Loose him, and let him go.” John 11:44

When Lazarus (who represents the exiles of Israel) comes forth, he is bound up. Why? Because he broke the covenant and didn’t follow the Torah. Yeshua is commanding him to “loose him and let him go.” Loose him and let him go means “teach him the Torah.”

The exiles of Israel will be set free from being bound up when they are taught the Torah. (Isaiah 61: 1-3)

Comfort is a “code word” that is associated with the end of the exile for Israel.

Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, says your God. Isaiah 40:1

For the LORD shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody. Isaiah 51:3

Wilderness and waste places = exile.

Eden and garden of the Lord = the Messianic era

Comfort = end of the exile

And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. Isaiah 35:10

It is Yeshua who comforts the exiles as He comes to regather them.

Did you know that when Yeshua was speaking to “the multitudes” in the Sermon on the Mount that He was speaking to Ephraim in exile? “Multitudes” is defined for us in Genesis 48:19, as Jacob is praying a blessing over Ephraim: “And his father refused and said, “I know it my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother (Ephraim) shall be greater than he and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.”

This sets up the framework and the context for his entire message. Understanding WHO He is talking to helps us understand WHAT He is saying and WHY He is saying it.

We have been doing a series looking at Matthew 5 where Yeshua is teaching the Torah to the multitudes and the setting is a mountain. We need to remember is Yeshua is the Lawgiver, (James 4:12), where it is written, “There is one lawgiver who is able to save.”

Yeshua is teaching at the “sod” level the torah to the multitudes. The word “multitudes” when you decode it, is a reference to Ephraim, the Northern Kingdom of 10 tribes. In Genesis 48:19, the blessing Ephraim was given from his father was that “his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.” It is said of Ephraim in Hosea 8:12 that Ephraim would call Torah a “strange thing.” This is because Ephraim, the Northern Kingdom, would drift far away from Torah.
