In this series, we will be examining the Yom Kippur service that is described in Leviticus 16 and the priestly service of Yom Kippur. In traditional Judaism, the Torah portion reading for Yom Kippur in the morning service is Leviticus 16. This is what we will look at in detail in this session.

The afternoon Yom Kippur service, the reading comes from Leviticus 18. The Haftorah portion is reading the book of Jonah. The reason Jonah is read is because this book deals with the subject of repentance and how an entire city repented before Yahweh, thus averting Yahweh’s judgment. Repentance is a major theme of Yom Kippur.

The earthly tabernacle that Yahweh gave instructions to Moses to build, is a type and shadow, a “copy” of the true heavenly tabernacle. Yeshua is the High Priest of the Renewed covenant and He superintends this renewed covenant through the Melchezedik Priesthood.

Yeshua is our Great High Priest and lives to ever intercede for us:

By so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant. Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. Hebrews 7: 22,25

Yom Kippur is the most holy day of the year because the entire day is spent fasting, praying and repenting of our sins.

We can repent out of love for the God of Israel because we don’t want to hurt his heart.We can repent out of the fear or reverence for the God of Israel because we don’t want to face the consequences. And, we can repent to the God of Israel because we don’t want to through the pain and suffering that the consequences of sin brings into our lives.

The Rabbis teach that Yom Kippur/Day of Atonement only reconciles man unto to the God of Israel, but that it does not deal with sin between the brethren. Yeshua taught that before we approach the God of Israel, that we need to be reconciled to our brother.

Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Matthew 5:23-24

We are to forgive one another as our Father has forgiven us. It is a command, not a suggestion. If we do NOT forgive one another, our Father will not forgive us. If we want VERTICAL forgiveness FROM Yahweh, we are commanded to extend LATERAL forgiveness towards one another. If someone comes to me and asks for forgiveness, I am commanded to extend and grant that forgiveness.

For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:14-15.

The Torah teaches us that we must confess our sins AND the sins of our forefathers. We tend to focus only on our own personal sin. However, the sins of our forefathers DO impact us and affect us. There is personal sin and there is “national” sin; that is, sins of the nation of the people who follow the God of Israel.

If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me; nd that I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity: Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land. Leviticus 26: 40-42

Nehemiah understood this principle of confessing of the sins of your people and of your forefathers. Read Nehemiah 1: 5-7

And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keeps covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments: Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou may hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned. We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses. Nehemiah 1:5-7

Two major national sins that are in the House of Joseph/Ephraim that needs repentance:

*the sin of our forefather Jeroboam, who led the Northern kingdom into rebellion and instituted golden calf worship system.

*the sin of turning away from the Torah. Much of mainstream Christianity accepts Jesus/Yeshua as personal savior but does NOT follow Yeshua’s Torah.

The major themes associated with Yom Kippur/Day of Atonement are:

*It is known as the Day of Atonement ~ This is the Day that the God of Israel would forgive the sins of His people in a national way.

*It is known as “Face to Face” ~ This is an idiomatic expression for being in His presence

*It is “The Day” and is recognized as the Holiest Day in the year.

*It is known as “The Fast” ~ a day that we afflict our souls.

*It is known as “The Great Shofar”

*It is known as “Neilah” ~ The closing of the gates of heaven

Yom Kippur is the Day when white garments were worn by the High Priests. What is the deeper spiritual meaning? White garments are associated with purity, holiness, and with our sins being forgiven.

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. Isaiah 1:18

The bride of Messiah is an overcomer whose sins are forgiven, whose heart is pure, and who has righteous deeds.

We are on a spiritual journey. We turn our back upon Babylon, Egypt and the world, and we are journeying to the Promised land, to Mt Zion, where Yeshua will rule and reign for 1,000 years.

Our journey begins with Passover as we leave Egypt, Babylon and the world system. We apply the blood of Yeshua upon the doorposts of our heart, we experience Passover Feast, and we come into salvation by faith through grace. Next in our spiritual journey, we go to Mt Sinai and experience Shavuot, the giving of the Torah, where the God of Israel makes a wedding proposal to us, and the Ketubah is the Torah.

As we continue the spiritual journey, we come Feast of Trumpets, also known as “The Day of the Awakening Blast” and the sound of the shofar awakens those who are in spiritual slumber, it awakens the dead to resurrection and this awakening blast speaks to the hearts of the exiles of Israel that it is now time to be regathered and begin a journey HOME to the land of Israel. The sound of the shofar then, causes us to YEARN for the ingathering of the exiles of Israel!

In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping: they shall go, and seek the LORD their God. They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come, and let us join ourselves to the LORD in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten. Jer 50:4-5

You that have escaped the sword, go away, stand not still: remember the LORD afar off, and let Jerusalem come into your mind. Jer. 51: 50

There will come a time, during Jacob’s trouble, when the “end of days” daughter of Babylon nation is attacked, and, we who are living in exile, who are living in Babylon, we will be weeping and repenting. We will be “asking the way to Zion”, which is the equivalent of asking the way to Yeshua and to following His Torah. Jerusalem should come to our minds and hearts. This will be a time to flee Babylon/flee the United States and return to Israel. Yeshua will gather us and take us there! May

From the Jewish Artscroll Rosh Hashanah Ashkenaz, (a Jewish prayer book) we learn about 10 reasons for the sounding of the shofar. Here are those reasons for blowing the shofar:

*The shofar is blown to make a proclamation and declaration that the God of Israel is King over the whole earth.

*It is a warning to repent before the God of Israel.

*It is to remind us to follow the Torah of the God of Israel.

*So that we would hear the word and the message of the prophets of the God of Israel.

*So that we would pray for the rebuilding of the Temple.

*To remember the binding of Isaac upon the altar, who offered his life to the God of Israel.

and to remind us to offer our life as a whole burnt offering unto the God of Israel.

*To remind us to have fear and reverence for the God of Israel. This is expressed by keeping His commands. When we hear the sound of the shofar, it causes us to shake, to fear and to tremble, and to humble ourselves before the God of Israel.

*To remember the Day of Judgment is coming upon us.

*To remember the ingathering of the exiles of Israel and to awaken our yearning for it.

*To proclaim our faith in the resurrection of the dead.

Yom Teruah is known as the Day of the Awakening blast. What is the purpose of this “Awakening blast”, the blowing of the shofar? To awaken people from their spiritual slumber. To warn them to repent, as we are in the season of judgment. The sounding of the shofar is meant to arouse those who have fallen asleep spiritually.

Now let’s look at examples of the blowing of the shofar in the scriptures.

*The Torah was given with the sound of the shofar. (Exodus 19:19).

*Israel conquered Jericho with the blast of the shofar. (Joshua 6:20)

*Israel will be alerted to the coming of Messiah with the sound of the shofar. (Zech 9:14,16)

*The shofar will be blown at the time of the ingathering of the exiles of Israel. (Is. 27:13)

*The shofar was blown to assemble the Israelites for war. (Judges 3:27, 2 Sam 20:1)

*The watchmen who stood upon Jerusalem’s walls blew the shofar to give warning to the people of the God of Israel. (Ezekiel 33:3-6)

*The shofar was blown at the start of the Jubilee year. (Lev 25:9)

*The shofar is a reminder that the God of Israel is sovereign. (Psalm 47:5)

*The shofar/rams horn is a reminder of Abrahams sacrifice of Isaac and the God of Israel’s provision of a ram as a substitute. (Genesis 22:13)

*The shofar was blown to announce the beginning of feasts and the celebration of the new moon. (Numbers 10:10, Psalm 81:1-3)

*The blowing of the shofar is also a signal and a call to repentance. (Isaiah 58:1)

*The blowing of the shofar is associated with the warning of the coming of the day of the Lord. (Joel 2:1)

*The blowing of the shofar will be sounded at the resurrection of the dead. (1 Thes 4:16)

*John was taken up to heaven with the sound of the shofar. (Rev 4:1)

*Seven shofars are sounded when the God of Israel judges the earth during the tribulation period. (Revelation 8 and 9).

*The shofar is used for the coronation of biblical kings. (1 Kings 1:34, 39)

From Rosh Hashanah (also known as Feast of Trumpets) to Yom Kippur, this time frame is known as the Days of Awe (Yamim Nora'im). What is the spiritual application and meaning of the Days of Awe? In this teaching, we will examine this.

With the Days of Awe, we have two significant spiritual applications. The first is personal, and the second is prophetic. It is a reminder that Yom Kippur is fast approaching. On Yom Kippur, atonement will be made for each individual person.

The rabbis teach that during the Days of Awe, the gates of heaven are open to receive the prayers of those who repent. In the final service of Yom Kippur, the gates of heaven are seen as being closed.

The Days of Awe are a prophetic foreshadow of the tribulation period. The feasts are rehearsals but one day, Yeshua will return and it will not be a rehearsal!

The prophetic application of the Days of Awe is this: they are associated with the time known as “Jacob’s trouble” or the “great tribulation”. The Days of awe are associated with the “birth pangs” of coming into the Messianic era. The Days of awe will focus in on what is happening with events in Israel, the “controversy of Zion” and the city of Jerusalem.

The Fall festivals teach us about the second coming of Yeshua the Messiah.

Yom Teruah is also known as the “Day of the Coronation” (HaMelech). This is a major theme associated with this feast. The spiritual application is this: when Yeshua returns, He will be coming back as King of Israel, as the Messiah ben David.

And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. Revelation 19:16

In this session, we continue our focus on repentance. What is true repentance? We will look at that in greater detail. The bible teaches us that there are three levels of sin: Transgression, sin, and iniquity. In this teaching, we will define those terms.

It is the shedding of blood that atones for our sins. Yeshua died on the tree and shed his blood so that we could be forgiven of our sins. He made a new covenant with the house of Judah and the house of Israel:

But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Jeremiah 31:33

There are three steps to genuine repentance. They are:

*confession of sin

*godly sorrow and remorse for the sin

*taking corrective action/change in behavior

The season of teshuva (repentance) is associated with the blowing of the shofar to prepare our hearts and to warn us that the judgment day of the God of Israel is coming upon us and that we need to examine our lives and repent of our sins.
