The annual cycle Torah reading for this week is parsha “Chukat,” Numbers chapters 19 through 21) and it contains what is sometimes called the most enigmatic “chuq” (or, “do this because He says so”) in the Torah: the Red Heiffer, or parah adumah. Even Solomon is thought to have said he just didn’t quite get it.

The Erev Shabbat reading:

The Sabbath Day midrash tackles that Greatest Mystery head on. But, even more interesting, what might be the SECOND most mysterious ‘chuq’ in the Torah is in this same parsha! The “bronze serpent” (but the Hebrew term is much more alliterative: ‘nachash nachoshet’) – aka the ‘snake on a stick.’

There is a common thread that runs through this entire portion, too. Actually, several, but all evidently related: Death. And some important numbers. And water, in multiple ways, and ‘salvation.’ But still one more that Mark suggests, which may even help explain some of the confusion, is “I blame Moses.”

All throughout scripture prophecy most times has a long plan and then a short plan. The long plan is always first and the fulfillment may be in the distant future, and you don’t know the day or the hour that it will be fulfilled. Then the short plan is very often revealed, including the date of its coming fulfillment once you get really close to its time. So, there can be two timelines for one prophecy or set of prophecies, a long plan and a short plan, a far plan and a near plan.

Consider Noah who began building his boat 120 years before the flood came. He knew it was going to come, he just didn’t know when that was the long plan, but then the short plan was revealed to him seven days before the flood came. As the time of fulfillment neared, he was told exactly what day it would start to rain.

Same thing with the exodus from Egypt. The long plan was revealed to Abraham, Isaac, and then Jacob. As they got closer to going to Egypt, the plans became more distinct. Abraham saw it afar off, and Jacob actually went to Egypt. But still, it was a long plan… the rest of 400 years before they would know exactly when the exodus was coming. Then, when Moses came back from the desert, he revealed the short plan and they knew exactly when they were going to leave, the night of Passover. Same thing with Daniel 9, all of Daniel’s visions actually, but Daniel 9:24-27 is what we’re specifically dealing with in part 1 of this message regarding verse 24’s long plan of 3500 years and in part 2 verses 25’s and 27’s short plan of 70 actual weeks of days.

This week is a bit of a ‘change of pace,’ but for an important reason.

There has been so much concern and churn of late about everything from economic meltdown and domestic terrorism from embedded invader cells, to outright nuclear war, that host Mark Call suggests that those who really want to understand what is REALLY going on should ask some pointed questions.

Such as, if the goal of “peaceful nuclear power” really is safe, efficient electricity for people, why are certain important technologies that can actually solve problems (not to be confused with NOT-‘green’ and not remotely ‘renewable’ non-solution placebos like “wind”) not even discussed? Much less emphasized.

Perhaps the other agenda (or agendaS, even!) is obvious.
