However, it was a unique show starring Karl Weber as a Dr. who roamed the western territory in 1870's helping anyone who needed his help... Track includes brief history of the series and an introduction to this premier episode... the first show that began a 4 year run on NBC. Managing to hold an audience for 4 years and 160 episodes was no small achievement given that it all began in 1949 when television was beginning to take away radio audiences. A show that ran for 4 years at this time in our technological history, had to be well written, acted, and produced. This series meets all the requirements. This track has a strong introduction ot the Philco Radio TIme series, with some background on host Bing Crosby and his guest Frankie Lane. Also includes a radio adaptation of "The Man Without A Country" from the short story by Edward Everett Hale in 1863. Narrated by Bing Crosby. This was the Thanksgiving show for the series in 1947. Produced by Mayfair Productions... this syndicated series ran for only one year - 1949 with 52 radio adaptations of Damon Runyon's short stories narrated by "Broadway" played by actor John Brown. The show was very popular so that reruns carried on well into the 1950's. Track begins with a short history of the series and the program "Dancing Dan's Christmas" which was broadcast on March 12, 1949. People who have never heard a Damon Runyon Theater radio show are almost always surprised by how entertaining they are... they can make you laugh or even bring a tear to your eye.
