Heard on the new ABC Blue Network, (previously the NBC Blue Network)... this variety show highlighted some of the biggest talents in the 1940's. This show features host Bob Hope and the guests of honor are Judy Canova and the cast of Duffy's Tavern. Nice mix of comedy and music with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. NBC Blue Network (later to become ABC) presented this very enjoyable program from 1941-42.. A combination of talent, terrific music, comedy, and some very clever tongue-in-cheek jabs at high society chamber music makes for an entertaining half-hour. Introduction on track outlines the history of "Gene Autry's Melody Ranch" and some personal information on Gene Autry's amazing accomplishments as a "Yodeling Cowboy" and much more. Following the intro is the show circa 1947... Gene's gun is the weapon that killed his friend and neighbor, Art... but Gene did not kill Art... the plot thickens... Pat Buttram does a comedy routine at the start of the program. This show will be in the "Western" and "Country Music" playlists.

After World War II the United States government, in order to pay for the war, pushed the sales of US Savings Bonds in many ways and radio was just one of them. These 15 minute shows featured top singing stars and generally one short comedy bit in among the pitches to buy U.S. Savings Bonds. Many people did and they turned out to be a fairly decent return, especially in comparison to the interest rates available today. Anyway, this is a good chance to hear LaVerne, Maxene, and Patty ... The Andrews Sisters... the biggest harmony singing group of the swing and boogie-woogie eras. The were elected to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1996, 1998, and 2000. Track has brief introduction and background to the "Nightbeat" series that was on NBC from 1950-52 and starred Frank Lovejoy. Bill Johnstone stars as Lamont Cranston (aka The Shadow) as he takes over the role from Orson Welles in 1939 to 1943 on the Mutual Radio Network. This was a New Year's Day show from 1939 and it involves a man who has invented a time machine that causes its victims to go back and repeat things they said and did in the past. A rather interesting take on malfunctioning time machines! This show is in my "Shadow" and "New Years" playlists.

Mayfair Productions was owned by actor Alan Ladd. In 1947-48 they turned out 52 episodes of "Box 13" a mystery adventure series featuring Alan Ladd as Dan Holiday and Sylvia Picker as his secretary, Suzy. Great cast of supporting actors.
