January 18, 2020Edward R. Murrow - CBS Reports - Case of the Flying Saucers - Apr. 7, 1950In 1950, Edward R. Murrow narrated a half-hour documentary called "The Case of the Flying Saucers." It attempted to offer a balanced look at unidentified flying objects, a subject of great interest at the time. In the piece Murrow interviewed both Kenneth Arnold (whose 1947 report initiated interest in UFO's) and astronomer Donald Menzel (who argued that UFO reports could be explained as people misidentifying common phenomena. At any case... it is an interesting piece of radio history as broadcast by one of the most famous reporters of all time... This is in the "History of Radio" playlist....more28minPlay
January 18, 2020Radio City Playhouse - The Ground Floor Window - Drama - 1949Radio City Playhouse was a drama anthology series on NBC Radio from July 1948 to January 1950. The series featured many New York City radio actors from what was known as "Radio Row"... many very talented people. The series specialized in high energy stories... often life-threatening situations with strong male-female roles Many of the stories were written by then relatively unknown writers... the criteria for getting a show accepted and produced was simple... it had to be a good story. This is one such story... involves a boy who was born with cerebral palsy... Danny... he grows to love a new tenant, Ruth. He saw her for the first time looking out of the ground floor window... This story and more from Radio City Playhouse can be found in the playlist "Drama/Adventures" on this podcast....more31minPlay
January 18, 2020The Six Shooter - Thicker Than Water - Starring James Stewart - March 14, 1954 - WesternThis track has a detailed introduction to the series "The Six Shooter" which was a very unique Western. It only ran from 1953-54 because television was rapidly taking over radio drama and James Stewart refused sponsorship by Chesterfield cigarettes. He did not want to encourage people to smoke... a habit that he did not have and never did in a motion picture. This and more like it can be found in the "Westerns" playlist here on Heirloom Radio. "The Six Shooter" happens to be one of my favorite shows and I hope you enjoy this.......more33minPlay

Track has an intro that gives some background of the program. The sponsor was Vaseline Petroleum Products, and the commercials are left in because they were rather unique at the time... Dr. Christian was a doctor of the past... not having the tools and knowledge that doctors have today, but certainly had compassion and empathy for all of his patients... as patients or friends. Oh, and he made House Calls! This is the 5th episode of the series and is entitled "The Blind Boy Story".
