Making its debut on NBC in 1944, Boston Blackie was the spinoff of the Boston Blackie movies. Originally Chester Morris and RIchard Lane played Blackie and Inspector Faraday. Scheduled as a summer replacement for Amos 'n Andy the show was set to run just 13 summer episodes. The series turned out to be extremely popular and on April 11, 1945 it had its own time slot as it returned to the airwaves. This time around Richard Kollmar played Blackie, Lesley Woods and Jan Miner played girlfriend, Mary Wesley, Maurice Tarplin, Richard Lane and Frank Orth served at various times as Inspector Faraday and Shorty was played by Tony Barrett.
