The Whistler ran for 692 episodes beginning on May 16, 1942 and ending on September 22, 1955. It was originally broadcast on the West Coast Regional CBS Radio Network, but also heard in Chicago and over the Armed Forces Radio Service (which this track comes from). Signal Oil was the sponsor... they were the big oil company on the West Coast at the time. The track begins with a 3m 30 sec with background information about the show and then "Gateway to Danger" begins. Alan Ladd returns in another episode of "Box 13"... a syndicated radio drama about the escapades of newspaperman-turned-mystery novelist, Dan Holiday (Ladd). The series was created by Mayfair Production, a company owned by Alan Ladd and, being a syndicated series, it aired in different cities over different dates and times. Also starring Sylvia Picker, Edmund MacDonald, Frank Lovejoy, Lurene Tuttle, Alan Reed and others. Excellent supporting cast. Well written scripts. Quality production values and excellent acting made this series a hit ... 52 episodes made up the entire series. The series was attempted on TV, but did not last. Alan Ladd was a busy actor, doing many films... so there were contract and available time issues and the series ended. A very popular Comedy-Variety show with the emphasis on "Comedy"... Ran 10 years on CBS/NBC. "Can You Imagine That?" This show featured strange and surprising stories from the newspapers columns around the country prior to 1940. The purpose of the show was to "well, give you something to think about" Each episode contains three stories, two described by the narrator and the third acted out as a short dramatization. The series is in the same genre as "Ripley's Believe It or Not," "Strange As It Seems," and "Incredible But True" These shows were often used by radio stations to fill time or announce some sort of event as there is ample bed music in the series to allow for an announcer voice over.... I removed most of the music and inserted an OTR commercial... what would radio or television be without a commercial? Probably Cable .... but nothing is free! Classic radio western starring John Dehner as Paladin and Ben Wright as Hey Boy. This series ran 106 episodes on CBS Radio between Nov. 23, 1958 and Nov. 27, 1960. What makes it interesting is that the radio show was developed AFTER the television show starring Richard Boone. It usually happened the other way around. Dehner's Paladin is much different than Boone's portrayal of the character. Initially the radio shows were adaptations from the television shows, but that changed into original stories rather rapidly. This and Gunsmoke were the two most popular westerns on the radio and they certainly were two of the best written and well acted ones as well. Listen here or on Itunes or Google Play Music... This is an original radio play that I created as part of my Audio Theater program on WSCA-LP in Portsmouth, NH in 2010. I did the Audio Theatre program 2 hours a week for 14 years. Vidalia VanDam was the guest on the show who demonstrated how to cook various recipes ON THE RADIO... things did not often go as smooth as one would hope... in a tiny radio studio with a large wooden bench... This episode features a recipe for Cajun Roast Beef... There are two more episodes in the series... hope you like it.

Episode 2 on Heirloom Radio of the "Five Minute Mystery" series. A syndicated radio program in the early to mid-1950's that was used by local radio stations as a "Filler" when they had some time to kill or perhaps when they needed to advertise some promotion or event that the station was sponsoring. There were elongated breaks within the five minutes when organ music was played so that a voice over could be added to promote something related to the station ... and then "back to our Five Minute Mystery" for the conclusion. Listeners were encouraged to pit their "sleuthing and problem-solving skills" to use to try to figure out "Who did it and why?" all within 5 minutes. I took a little creative license here to help fill in the organ music time gaps.... I will place these in a separate playlist.... thanks for listening.
