NOTE: Graham Alvord (103 years old) passed away on Feb 29, 2020... just 9 days after his wife, Jean died. He was married to Jean for 75 years. The photo was taken on 3.14.20 at the Funeral for Graham and Jean in Kittery Point, Maine. I am so happy to have had the opportunity to meet Graham and his wife Jean and to be able to do the interview on this audio track. He was one of the last veterans of D-Day. On May 22, 2015, I visited the home of Graham Alvord (photo) who resided in Kittery, ME. He was 99 years old and in 2014 had attended the 70th Anniversary of D-Day in Normandy France as representing the United States. He got to meet President Obama, Queen Elizabeth, and other members of the Royal Family. He was presented with the French Croix de Guerre (Medal of Honor) for his valor on D-Day as a Lt Commander of the Landing Ship known as the LST-133. You can see a video of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaw9KiRF1kI
I did a 40 minute interview with Graham and it was edited and broadcast on the Community Radio Station (WSCA-LP) in Portsmouth, NH on June 2, 2015. Later, part of this interview was used in a documentary film about Graham Alvord. As of this writing in June of 2019, Graham is 103 years old and a most remarkable man. It was an honor to meet him and his wife (of then 74 years) and to have the opportunity to interview him. I am proud to share this interview with listeners of this podcast as the 75th Anniversary of D-Day is just over the horizon. Listen here or on Itunes or Google Play Music and thank you for listening to this piece of history on Heirloom Radio, a different kind of oldies program. Thanks to Steve Kowal for taking many photos of this interview.
