Ronnie Tomanio is an author of several Children's books. He works on a local public media television program with me to produce "Don't Dis' My Ability" as show for and about people living with disabilities and those who love and care for them. A few years ago he asked me to try to do an audio form of his short stories about his pet cat, Jeffrey, who passed away at the age of 18 years old this past March. I did one story and Ronnie enjoyed it so much that he has been writing some additional stories and this is the third in the current series or Playlist. It is all in fun and brings a smile to his grandchildren's faces... grandchildren who, when they were little, were deathly afraid of Jeffrey (who did nothing to deserve that fear!) This is not an old time radio program, but it is a reading by John Lovering of a work by Dr. Richard Lederer entitled: "Words and Phrases Remind Us Of The Way We Word." There is a definite connection between many of the words heard in old time programs with the words that Dr. Lederer references in his writing. If you are of a certain age, you will be able to identify these words quickly... if you are younger than that "certain age" not so much! :) Enjoy.

Musical Variety programs such as "Birds Eye Open House with Dinah Shore" were all the rage in the 1940's. Generally the shows were 30 min in length and featured a well-known popular singer (Dinah Shore) supported by an announcer who often played the straightman (Harry VonZell)... a comedian or two (Groucho Marx) and orchestra and often a special guest star. Dinah cut her radio teeth working with Eddie Cantor in the 1930's so she not only had a wonderful, popular voice, but this Tennesee-born pop singer could do comedy too! On June 11, 1950 CBS News Documentary Division aired this episode of "You Are There" which took listeners back in a time warp to Sept 7, 1853 in the Tabernacle in New York City to a huge Women's Rights Convention. The 10 Resolutions that were passed by the large group of women there were very progressive for the time... and many of them did not come to be until 70+ years later... even today some of these are questionable. This track includes an introduction about the series "You Are There" as well as background on the Surrender of Sitting Bull. He was the last man to surrender his rifle to the U.S. Army on July 21, 1881. Unfortunately, Sitting Bull was shot and killed less than 9 years later, on Dec. 15, 1890. Why he was killed and who did it is not still well known.

This CBS New "You Are There" program is as much educational as it is entertaining. The shows were carefully fact-checked and as such remain as viable today as they were back 70+ years ago.

On the air from May 16, 1942 until September 22, 1955, "The Whistler" attracted a huge listening audience because it was extraordinarily different from any other mystery program on the air. The show originated from the West Coast and was originally sponsored by the Signal Oil Corporation (located in the West Coast). It was part of the CBS network and was also broadcast in Chicago and over the Armed Forces Radio Service. The show was also adopted into a film noir series by Columbia Pictures in 1944. A pre-Dragnet police procedural show that ran on the Mutual Radio Network from 1946-54. Main character from 1948 on was Police Captain Jim Scott, played mostly by Joe DeSantis. He was an officer who believed that the police had to play by the rules and that their job was to protect everyone fair and equally. Sounds like a good idea...

NBC Blue Network (later to become ABC) presented this very enjoyable program from 1941-42. The track features a brief introduction about the program, so I will not go into it here. A combination of talent, terrific music, comedy, and some very clever tongue-in-cheek jabs at high society chamber music makes for an entertaining half-hour.
