"What a revolt'n development this is!" ... probably the most remembered catchphrase that came out of the 7 year run of "The Life of Riley" starring William Bendix. The show was developed by Gummo Marx, one of the Marx Brothers and aired from 1944-51 on radio...and with Bendix as Riley from 1953-58 on NBC television. The track contains some detailed information about the interesting beginnings of the show and who played Riley, but wasn't a hit with the listening audience. Bendix was the perfect "Riley" and this "Mothers Day" theme show is appropriate with that day soon coming at the time of this posting. William Boyd starred as Hopalong Cassidy, a fictional western character created by Clarence Mulford. Andy Boyd played his often comical sidekick, California. The radio show was syndicated in 1948 and continued to 1950. It was then picked up by the Mutual Radio Network and ended on December 27, 1952. It was considered a juvenile adventure program... but in combination with many films and television, adults too were under the "Hopalong" spell. This track features a longer than usual introduction as this program has a very unique history associated with it. William Boyd was one of the most financially savvy of any performer of his time... he made millions on the Hopalong brand and all the peripheral items that were sold under that brand.
