This is Part 2 of a two part series focused on Sound Effects in the history of radio. This section deals with all the Unions that got involved depending upon what a Sound Effects Technician was asked to do... make a sound with equipment, make a sound with your voice, or make a sound with something that sounded like a musical instrument (gong)... or if you were a vocal artist and made a sound like an animal... were you also a Sound Effects Technician? Having produced over 75 recreations of old time radio programs, several broadcast live... I have found that working with the manual sound effects used in "old time radio" has been a fascinating and fun hobby. Many of the items that I use to create sound effects are modeled after what I have seen and read about in the literature. In the photo is yours truly with my "Wind Machine" - rotating the wooden drum with slats while have a piece of red canvas on top of the drum, gives the sound of the wind whistling ... the faster you crank... the higher the pitch and the more intense the storm! But sound effects (SFX) were also created by vocal artists imitating animal and other sounds... this is Part 1 of two parts giving a little history and some controversy about the art of making sound effects.

Airing from 1931-1954, Chester Lauck and Norris Goff performed as Lum Edwards and Abner Peabody. The two characters performed as a double act, with Lum generally playing the straight man to Abner's attempts to break free from Lum's influence. As co-owners of the Jot 'em Down Store in the fictional town of Pine Ridge, Arkansas, the pair are constantly stumbling upon moneymaking ideas only to find themselves fleeced by nemesis Squire Skimp, before finally finding a way to redeem themselves. Lum and Abner played the hillbilly theme with deceptive cleverness. The hillbillies knew that the slickers would get what was coming to them sooner or later and either didn't mind or knew more than they let on that the slickers getting theirs was a matter of fortunate circumstances.
