Lionel Barrymore first played Ebenezer Scrooge on the CBS Campbell Playhouse in 1934. He reprises his role in this 1939 version on the same series. He actually played Scrooge for 9 times ending with the Hallmark Hall of Fame in 1954. That show was broadcast on December 19, 1954, but Barrymore died on November 15, 1954... so the show was either recorded earlier of was a rebroadcast of a previous program. As Barrymore says in this Christmas eve 1939 recording... it was the role that he most loved to play and he is very good at it. So here is Charles Dickens beloved classic "A Christmas Carol" published as a novella on December 19th 1843. Considering this recording is 79 years old as of 2018... it is in remarkably good shape.
