By 1947 American audiences were growing bored of Sherlock Holmes... Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character had been around for over 60 years and many films, short stories, novels, and radio shows had featured the characters of Sherlock and Dr. Watson. By 1947 Basil Rathbone decided to separate from the character as he was being typecast too often. Tom Conway took over his role, hence the "New" Adventures. Conway sounded very much like Rathbone, intentionally to be sure... the stories were good, well acted, production values high, it is just that the audience had grown tired of Sherlock... so only 39 episodes were produced for ABC radio network.
