Member question! Are home simulators beneficial and do I recommend them?

I did use them in the beginning of my training, it did help build my confidence. However of course it will never be as good as the real thing. But yes it can help you with certain things.

Depending on the aircraft you will be flying, these limitations will be different. I have seen people that went for their dreams even losing weight to become a helicopter pilot. So awesome! In the Enstrom, there is no seat weight. It depends a lot also on how a person is built.

Movie and TV helicopter take off's are crazy! No comparison to real world. They do no pre flight, no hover check, they get in and they take off all crazy and fast. Watch as I guide you through a nice normal takeoff, then after the video leave your comments and questions below!

I have some tips on Helicopter Radio Communications for you! First off..Sound Confident! Even if you're not, you're gonna get farther and in turn you will become more confident. Another tip is you can combine base and final in one radio call. I just think it makes managing the aircraft better.

You're going to get better with practice! Everyone makes mistakes! Know your airspace and what's going on around you! Understand your route and your radio communication will come out well!

Use the force Luke!! Coffee with Kenny today, been having questions about students struggling with the cyclic. So I have a couple tips for you. One trick to mastering it is to not over exaggerate your movements. Your cyclic changes should be very minute, very small.

Also if you have trim, you should get comfortable with that, it's awesome. Once you get it you'll be amazed at smooth it can be!

I've got another question for you Kenny. I've been doing a lot of research on how to be competitive once I'm done with my training. From what I've seen, pilots with college degrees are more competitive than pilots without degrees when being considered for pilot positions. Do you agree with that, if yes, does it matter if you have an aviation degree or is a degree in another field just as valuable.

I have a BS in Computer Science and I'm getting ready to start the Professional Helicopter Pilot program. I realize I have to build up hours to be eligible for positions. I also realize that the first job for most pilots is being an instructor to get started. Beyond that, does a college degree matter and how much?

I don’t want the school I’m going to, or my name mentioned if you decide to publicly address this. However, I do want to tell you about a practice at my flight school that I find.. shady.

The school operates an R44 that they lease. I was told “Hey, this aircraft has to have a minimum number of hours on it every month for the lease. So, you might get the chance to fly it for a discounted rate, but it’ll be short notice.”
