I’m prepping for the commercial add-on, 70 total R44 hours and 40 hours PIC as of today. I feel at one with the machine when winds are consistent and less than 10-15kts, above that and gusting it’s eating me for lunch, downright humbling. Is it just a matter of more time flying in more challenging conditions or is there a technique you can suggest to better manage wind/gusting wind?

What's your advice on helicopter ownership?

In response to a viewers question..My opinion is that for the average Joe, No, it is not really feasible or ideal. If you have a lot of money to blow and to maintain the helicopter, then go for it. Parts are expensive!

I even sold my own helicopter after draining my savings and going broke just to own mine. I was in debt and beyond my means...don't fall in love with your aircraft! Let us hear your opinions and comments below the video!

#20 Female Pilot HOGS Member Experiences Prejudice

One of our female HOGS member relayed that she went off the street to Commercial Pilot and has 200 hours. Despite that, she says she felt that her instructors had prejudices against her for being a females.

Female Pilots can fly just as well as men. There are prejudices out there in any industry, you just have to keep going. Keep flying, stay current, get your CFI and stay confident! You have to be willing to make sacrifices for what you want, including relocating if your country doesn't have a big heli industry.

When Hovering Helicopter Pedals Seems To Be My Continuing Issue

Talking today about using the Pedals while hovering, and techniques to help. This question came from one of our Ground School members. First thing you're going to do when you get in the helicopter is adjust your pedals. Get it comfortable during your preflight, then finish up.

Avoid your legs cramping up if you're not comfortable, wear good comfy shoes as well! Remember to not overthink your movements, you will achieve that muscle memory!

So the reason a lot of people struggle with the set down is this, they're in a nice hover, and when they go to set down they might have a nice slow approach to the ground as you should. When you get to about six to eight inches above the ground, and you don't move the collective, it will usually stop. This is where people come down, they're nice looking good and they get there and they're feeling for the ground and they think, I should be there and they don't do anything with the collective. And then they start doing this, start banging around. You can actually do a test. If you get that nice smooth speed coming down and don't change anything it will touch, and then it'll come back up, and then it'll come back down. And if you find the right spot it'll just go keep going up and down.

I am 14 and am interested in helicopters what is your advice?

This young man emailed me his question, so awesome that he's interested in this! I read his question and give my thoughts on this at his age. Awesome question! I was amazed with helicopters at his age too!

Do well in school, apply yourself so that later on in life you can do what you want to do! Go for your dream if that's what you want! You can start taking lessons and even Solo at 16! We have lots of free information, talk to your parents or guardians!

You might have to save for several years, keep applying yourself, use your resources, keep your dream alive! Research in your area, there are aviation programs even in high schools now! The Military is also an option to save money.

When I almost crash landed in the snow!

Sitting here looking at all this snow and thinking about the time that I truly almost lost my life. We were bringing back a helicopter from New Hampshire to Indiana, we were along the lake so we ran into some lake effect stuff. We go to a small airport and it's closed and we can't even get in.

We had to get somewhere warm and safe, and didn't have time to sit and burn out all our fuel, so I made the decision to land in a nearby football field. I had landed in the snow many times before, I guess I misread the depth and fluffiness of this snow.

Every examiner asks this question, and I'm just going to tell you what his question is here, and then we're going to hit the FAR/AIM real quick and tell you exactly what it says so you understand it better. He said, "Kenny, this kind of goes hand-to-hand with where can we land question that you made a video about. Thank you, but it didn't address many of my questions. If we're expected to maintain a 500 foot AG altitude, where can this be broken for take-off and landing without evoking the wrath of local, federal municipalities, governments, FAA, et cetera?" #coffeewithkenny
