The Spiral of Containment: Rape's Aftermath is a travelling art exhibition that highlights the impact of rape through photography, an immersive soundscape and a hologram. The project was created over the course of several years, and uses art to express trauma. Each image is the visual translation of a rape survivor's personal story - a collective outcry of shared experience. The multi-media immersive and experiential exhibition by Mexican-Canadian photographer, cinematographer and foreign correspondent, Elisa Iannacone, featuring 25 hauntingly beautiful portraits of rape survivors, opens at South Africa’s iconic home of contemporary justice, CONSTITUTION HILL on 14 May 2022, with an exhibition specially curated for installation in the 25 Isolation Cells of NUMBER 4 PRISON. THE SPIRAL OF CONTAINMENT (SPRIAL) was first exhibited at The OXO Tower Bargehouse in London in 2018, to an overwhelming response from media and public alike. Consisting of 24 photographs, soundscapes and installations, and one holographic projection (self-portrait), each work in the SPRIAL suite of photographs features a rape survivor, in a fictionally-constructed portrait - magical-realist in style. The image drew from each subject’s recollections of their experiences, reframed and reworked into layered statements of empowerment, agency, and identity. The portraits were photographed in a range of locations and countries, including seven in South Africa. The Spiral project, and method, evolved from Iannacone’s own experience of rape, and therapeutic recovery. The 24 images are “colour-coded” into the 24 primary, secondary and tertiary colours in the colour wheel - with her own image, a 25th, monochromatic hologram. Iannacone funded the project, which took five years to complete, from her work in war zones.

The gigantic Rainbow Nation Blanket of Hope is laid out in Johannesburg as part of the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day initiative, whose founder, Carolyn Steyn, was recently honoured with the French National Order of Merit. “KnitWits” around the country have been busy knitting and crocheting up a storm ahead of 11 May 2022, when the massive, colourful “combined” blanket will be laid out at Steyn City School, symbolising the resilience and irrepressible spirit of the South African people during a difficult two years of Covid-19 and lockdowns. Humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers will then distribute the individual blankets to people in need ahead of what is expected to be a bitterly cold winter, giving small but meaningful tokens of hope to the rainbow nation. Also on board as partners in the Rainbow Nation Blanket of Hope project are Médicins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), Stuttaford Van Lines (which will be collecting the blankets from around the country and transporting them to Johannesburg for the laying-out event) and the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The 67 Blankets initiative has received a number of accolades over the years, including holding a Guinness World Record. At the end of March, Steyn, its founder and champion, was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre national du Mérite (Knight of the French National Order of Merit) by the French ambassador to South Africa, Aurélien Lechevalier, for her contribution to the deepening of cultural ties between France and South Africa. Her dedication to improving the lives of others, in the form of her cherished 67 Blankets initiative, was also recognised.

ATKV-Crescendo’s Platformsessiesmusic production to show off rising stars later this month in Stellenbosch.

This May will see months of hard work culminating in a vocal explosion as some of South Africa’s most powerful emerging women of song take to the stage as part of the ATKV-Crescendo Musical Development Project. On Friday, May 20, the Development Project, which mentors up-and-coming Afrikaans artists, is set to host a celebration of talent when 2022 ATKV-Crescendo Mentor Programme finalists, Marsha Botha and Athina Janes, join mentor, celebrated musician and poet, Gracia Nicholls, on stage. The women, who have been lauded for their vocal skills and writing abilities, are set to start the ATKV-Crescendo’sPlatformsessies off with a bang. According to Robin Fourie, the creative director and brand ambassador for ATKV-Crescendo and Platformsessies, this will be the first session with an exclusively female vocal cast. “This is the first time that we're going to have just ladies on the stage – it is an opportunity to celebrate our female songwriters, and champion them, as we want the world to hear the uniqueness of the writing style, as well as witness their skill level as entertainers,” he said, describing the show as an intimate performance with a sexy side. His views are echoed by fellow MC Whaden Johannes, an actor and radio personality as well as a seasoned singer-songwriter in his own right, who currently stars on the kykNET telenovela, Arendsvlei. “I never see myself as more experienced or that I know more, because, to be honest, those three ladies make me nervous. The talent that they're bringing is unheard of,” he said, adding that he is excited to once again share the stage with Fourie.
