Somebody sends us a blunt warning sign: a movement openly calling to scrap the Constitution and abolish the Senate. That is where we start, because it forces a real question most headlines dodge: what happens to federalism, state authority, and minority rights when you remove the very institutions designed to slow down raw majoritarian power? We walk through why the Senate exists in a constitutional republic, how the 17th Amendment already weakened state-level accountability, and why “pure democracy” sounds noble but has a long track record of collapsing into instability and coercion.
From there, we shift into a listener question sparked by the Museum of the Bible and the Founding Era’s public language. When early Americans said “religion,” were they talking about Buddhism, Islam, and Hinduism the way we often do today, or were they usually talking about Christian denominations? We explain why the historical record points strongly toward “religion” meaning denominational Christianity in many contexts, and why that matters for understanding the First Amendment, religious tests, and religious liberty debates.
We also dig into Maryland history: a Catholic-founded colony that becomes increasingly Protestant through population changes and political upheaval tied to England’s Glorious Revolution, including Cood’s Rebellion. Along the way, we highlight how religious conflict often carried political assumptions about centralized power versus decentralized self-government, and why figures like Charles Carroll of Carrollton still matter for the story of liberty.
