The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond, a nonprofit educational and service organization, celebrated its 40th anniversary March 14 with a lunch and recognition of the organization's many volunteers. Ralph Graner and Hal Costley, both past presidents of the board and chairmen of key committees, were recognized with distinguished service awards. The two men have served as drivers for older citizens who can no longer get to doctors’ appointments on their own, and have actively participated in Open University, the organization's educational arm. The Henrico Planning Commission April 11 endorsed a proposal from the Costco Corporation that would expand the Costco store on West Broad Street between Stillman Parkway and Springfield Road. The Henrico Board of Supervisors will hear the proposal at its May 7 meeting. As part of the project, the store would expand by 15% to 150,000 square feet and onsite fuel pumps would be upgraded from the current version, installed in the 1990s, and expanded. Virginia is set to receive 8 million as part of a settlement with major pharmaceutical distributors, opioid manufacturers and retail pharmacies, state officials announced on Tuesday. Richmond National Battlefield Park plans to conduct a prescribed burn during the week of April 15 on about 40 acres of property in the Cold Harbor area in Hanover County, not far from the Henrico-Hanover line. The burn will help maintain the landscape that existed when opposing armies fought in the area during the summer of 1864. It also will help enhance the park’s wildlife habitat, according to National Park Service officials. A prescribed burn is conducted every three to five years at the site. On a sunny, hot Monday, 800 Henrico elementary schoolers flocked to Douglas S. Freeman High School for the annual “Little Feet Meet” hosted by Special Olympics Virginia. The athletes – students with intellectual disabilities – were joined by their designated “buddies,” students without disabilities who were there to support them and to participate in a day of games, races, and prizes. A teenager was shot and killed while attending a party in Hanover County in April, and police need your help finding the suspect. The shooting occurred on April 6 in the 6000 block of McClellan Road, according to the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. When deputies arrived, they found the teen suffering from gunshot wounds that had occurred during a party. He was pronounced dead at the scene. On the 17th anniversary of the Virginia Tech shooting that killed 32 people, Virginia's two senators have introduced legislation that aims to reduce gun violence nationally. The Virginia Plan to Reduce Gun Violence Act would mandate the reporting of lost and stolen firearms, prevent children from accessing guns and implement a one-handgun-a-month policy.
