The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen has announced the return of Handmade for the Holidays, a digital catalog of handmade gifts, home décor, accessories and more featuring 23 Virginia makers and businesses.  The catalog aims to showcase local makers and their wares, offering shoppers products for themselves or gift-giving, as well as a glimpse of the story behind the products. Applications are now open for the 2024 list of "Virginia's Most Endangered Historic Places." Each May, during National Historic Preservation Month, Preservation Virginia highlights historic places across the commonwealth facing imminent or sustained threats.   The list, which so far has brought attention to nearly 200 historic places in Virginia, encourages individuals, organizations and local and state governments to advocate for their preservation and find solutions that will save unique locations for future generations. As the holiday season begins, Home Instead is encouraging Richmond-area residents to participate in the "Be a Santa to a Senior" program, which spreads holiday cheer to older adults in the community who may lack companionship during the holidays.  This year, program coordinators hope to collect gifts for 125 older adults, and have partnered with local fire departments to deliver the gifts to the seniors. Henrico County officials gathered in Highland Springs Tuesday morning to break ground on the county’s new Henrico Police South Station, a .2-million facility that will take shape on 11 county-owned acres at 640 North Airport Drive, between Nine Mile Road and I-295. When it opens in early 2025, the station will replace an existing one about 1.7 miles south, on Eastpark Court near I-64 in Sandston, which the county has been leasing for nearly two decades. The Henrico Planning Commission Nov. 9 endorsed plans for a massive 0-million redevelopment project near the Henrico-Richmond line that eventually could include as many as 700 apartments and/or condos, a hotel, 30,000 square feet of retail space, and almost 140,000 square feet of offices. Instead of waiting at a bus stop riders on the Greater Richmond Transit Company system will soon be able to call for a ride to pick them up. Monday, GRTC launched their new "Link Microtransit" service. It acts much like a ride-share program similar to Uber or Lyft. Using the new 'GRTC On The Go' application, or by calling the GRTC customer service line, riders will be able to call for a ride. The Community Foundation has recognized nine Henrico County Public Schools educators for outstanding instruction, awarding four with the REB Award for Teaching Excellence and naming five others finalists. The winners received grants that will enable them to continue their love of learning and pursue cutting-edge study in their fields. The Greater Richmond Transit Company is looking for 10 members to serve on GRTC's Rider Advisory Council and help to support a strong public transit system by providing suggestions and feedback.   A volunteer advisory council, the RAC meets quarterly to advocate on behalf of riders, work with GRTC on new initiatives, and generally improve the system.  Members may serve a maximum of three (3) one-year terms and will receive a stipend for participating. An eighth-grade student from Henrico County and a high school junior from Fairfax County were the first-place winners in the Virginia War Memorial’s 2023 Veterans Day Student Essay Contest. The winners were announced at the 67th Annual Veterans Day Ceremony held November 10 at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond.  The winner in the middle school category was David Contreras, an eighth-grade homeschooled student who lives in Henrico.
