Local organizers are busy planning the second annual Kickin’ it in the Community event in an effort to unite the community with entertainment and resources in a safe environment. The event will take place Saturday, Aug. 12 from noon to 6 p.m. at the Eastern Henrico Recreational Center at 1440 North Laburnum Avenue. A teenager was shot and killed at a Henrico apartment complex, according to Henrico Police. Police were called to the Cardinal Forest apartment complex in the 7700 block of Northbourne Court, near Shrader and Wistar roads, at about 8 p.m. Wednesday. There officers found an 18-year-old man with a gunshot wound who was pronounced dead at the scene. He was later identified as Teshawn Damon Archer of Henrico County. The River City is hosting a special event for the first time ever in celebration of July being Disability Pride Month. Teams from across the country will gather at Highland Springs High School to take part in a wheelchair rugby tournament this weekend. The number of Virginians changing the sex listed on their birth certificate more than doubled between 2020 and 2022 after the passage of a law streamlining the process for individuals wanting to do so. Previously, a person seeking to change the sex designation on their birth certificate had to provide the state registrar evidence that specific medical procedures had occurred as well as a court order. Now, a person can request the change by submitting the registrar a form from their health care provider stating “clinically appropriate treatment for gender transition” was provided. Virginia’s complicated formula for funding K-12 schools needs an overhaul in order for the state to adequately fund public education, according to the results of a major legislative study presented Monday.
