State police are investigating the in-custody death of a prisoner who arrived at Central State Hospital after being transported by four Henrico County Sheriff’s deputies. Henrico County Sheriff Alisa Gregory said that 28-year-old Irvo Otieno was taken to Central State Monday afternoon due to a mental health crisis. A new tool is designed to help residents of Metro Richmond determine their property’s flood risk. March 12-18 is Virginia Flood Awareness Week and leaders across the state are encouraging people to understand their local flood risk. More than 25,000 Virginians tried to cast a ballot in the 2022 midterm elections under same-day registration rules, a new process that had the most impact in college towns, according to statewide data obtained by The Virginia Mercury. A total of 25,353 ballots were cast via same-day registration in its first year of implementation, found a post-election report that state officials presented Tuesday. Of that amount, 24,297, or 96%, were counted as legitimate votes. Virginia firefighters will be required to complete a training program starting next year, about the risk of electric vehicle fires. Del. Israel O’Quinn, R-Washington, proposed House Bill 2451 to require the executive director of the Virginia Department of Fire Programs to develop a training program for electric vehicle fires. The program must be developed and available by July, 1 2024, according to the bill. All firefighters, including volunteer firefighters, must complete the training by Dec. 1, 2025. Kroger employees in Virginia and West Virginia are pursuing a class-action suit against the grocery giant, alleging that bugs in the company’s new payroll software system cheat them out of their rightful wages. The class-action lawsuit filed in Richmond in January is one of four filed by employees in five states against the country’s largest supermarket chain. Allegations include nonpayment for overtime or vacation time and unauthorized deductions from paychecks.
