The number of people filing first-time unemployment claims in Henrico during the most recent reporting week dropped to a level seen only twice before during the pandemic, according to data released Thursday by the Virginia Employment Commission. A total of 212 Henricoans filed initial claims during the week of Feb. 14-20, down from the 283 who did so the previous week – a decrease of 25%. Henrico Police responded to the scenes of two reported shootings Feb. 24 in Eastern Henrico and are seeking the public's help in learning more about each incident. One apparent shooting occurred at or near the Taco Bell near Laburnum and Gay avenues in Eastern Henrico (across from The Shops at White Oak Village), and the other occurred near the Richmond city line on Waverly Boulevard, not far from Mechanicsville Turnpike. COVID-19 vaccinations will ramp up in a major way in Henrico and Richmond beginning next week, according to Richmond and Henrico Health Districts officials. That’s because the districts will being receiving about 61% more vaccine doses from the federal government than they’ve been getting during the past month or so. The RHHD expects to receive 10,180 total doses to use in the two localities next week and at least that many in subsequent weeks, RHHD Nurse Manager Amy Popovich said during a press briefing Thursday. Henrico County reported 58 cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, according to the Virginia Department of Health. The seven-day moving average declined to 71 daily cases, reflecting similar levels from November. Despite there being no new hospitalizations related to the virus, there were 14 more virus-related deaths reported, according to VDH data. Many of these deaths may have occurred weeks ago, as the VDH is just processing many death certificates related to the post-holiday surge. Outdoor entertainment and sports venues soon will be able to welcome as many as 1,000 people – and may be able to host more than that by later this spring. Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam Wednesday announced that he would increase the maximum capacity for outdoor events at certain sports and entertainment venues March 1, allowing them to operate at 30% of their capacity levels or 1,000 people, whichever is lower.
