Her Herd episodes

  • Ash

Ash lives rurally with her husband Chris and daughter Lilly. She not only supports her husband to run their rural business, but she helps run their farm just outside of Bendemeer. Not traditionally a country girl Ash has thrown herself into her rural community and credits their love and support for getting her family through some of the tougher times. There will be so many rural women nodding to this remark, and it is so true that our love of the bush is deeply connected to the communities we live in, the people, essentially our ‘herd’.

Ash’s pregnancy was not without complications and required her to make additional travel to be monitor, but it wasn’t until the beautiful Lilly was earth side that the ‘fun’ really began.

What is clear to me is that Ash Chris and Lilly are a team, and without the love and support of particularly Chris she would not have made it through.

Ash is a powerhouse, driven to share her story so that she might be able to make others going through something similar feel less alone. We just had to help and share her story to our rural community.

Ash, Chris, and Lilly thank you so much for sharing your journey with us.

Ash sought support through a FB page, and she wanted us to make sure to highlight this community for other stoma mums out there, she is also more than happy to be a creative solution or a shoulder or any rural parents navigating this. What a woman.

  • Farmer Chris
Farmer Chris lives on a property with his wife (me - ain't he lucky ) and his two young boys Edward and Charles. Chris raises both cattle and sheep on his grazing property just outside of Armidale in New England. A man of the land, he loves a steak, a beer, a chat and his Mac truck – most likely in that order. Chris takes us through his journey of navigating miscarriage, pregnancy, birth and male factor infertility in the context of drought, bush fires and flooding rains as only the bush can provide. Speaking particularly about how blokes manage during a miscarriage, and the shame and isolation in male factor infertility, Chris overall wants other country blokes to know that they are not alone. Thank you so much darling for being willing and open to share, on a topic I know is not talked about.

  • Claire

Claire is an amazing mum to two little boys: Rosco and Jimmy. She lives on a farm with her husband, Jake. When Claire isn't helping on the farm, she's the creative force behind "iPhone Bridesmaid" and is dedicated to raising much-needed funds and awareness through "Lighting the Way." Additionally, Claire crafts the most delightfully scented candles with "Purposeful Candles."

Claire walks us through her journey of pregnancy, birth, and miscarriage. She articulately conveys the despair and grief associated with recurrent miscarriage.

She discusses the service gaps that exist in her community and speaks passionately about the miscarriage arena, with a keen desire to support other rural women through creative services.

Thank you, Claire, not only for sharing your story but also for the ongoing work you're undertaking in this field.

  • Alice
Alice is an incredible woman of strength and wisdom. She lives rurally on a farm with her husband, Dane, and son, George. Generously, Alice shares her journey through pregnancy, birth, and fertility. Importantly, she reveals how her family knows when to call it quits. Alice’s words humbled me as a clinician, witnessing her and her family’s resilience. Alice is brave, and as I’ve mentioned before, she’s truly a creative solution and resource in her community. I admire the way Alice speaks with the wisdom of lessons lived and learned, and the passion and joy she exudes when she believes she can help other rural women. Alice, Dane, and George, thank you so much for sharing your story. Many will feel validated and seen through your words and strength.

  • Soph

This week on the podcast we talk all things creative problem solving with Sophie.

Soph lives rurally with her husband Ross, and son Dougal. Sophie is an incredibly busy women, juggling being a mum and wife while running a sheep farm with Ross and her fruit shop in town.

Soph takes us through the journey of her pregnancy with Dougal, her surprise covid birth and then the process of navigating secondary infertility from a rural setting.

Soph tells her story with so much humour, honesty and grace. She identifies key issues of going over the ‘border’ for treatment and the lack of choice and options for women living rurally.

Sophie talks us through listening to your gut when you feel like your treatment no longer is working for you, and the importance of asking for help.

Both Anna and I cried and laughed interchangeably. Thank you to Sophie and Ross for sharing your incredible journey.

Sophie & Ross journey is ongoing, and we wish them all the very best.
