Wow - have we got a treat for you? This week Kym and Judith are delighted – and humbled – to chat to the extraordinary Sarah who is a scientist, sailor, adventurer, designer, stylist, teacher and entrepreneur. 

Sarah talks about growing up in Western Australia, and what led her to buy a boat and sail solo around the world – only to get shipwrecked off the coast of Mexico. And we chat about what led her to buy – sight unseen – a shack in western Tasmania (Captain’s Rest) that she renovated with $800 and is now one of Australia’s most popular short-term stays.

Sharalyn is the co-founder of the Women’s Healing Sanctuary, a safe, restful and nurturing place for women. Located near Port Stephens, about a 2.5 hour drive north of Sydney, the sanctuary provides short-term retreat accommodation for women who are experiencing distress, exhaustion or need a safe place to stay. 

We chat to Sharalyn about growing up in a small town in New Zealand and how she made the move to Australia. We find out about how through her own difficulties and personal tragedy, Sharalyn and her friend Janine founded this unique and special place, to provide women with the opportunity for restoration and healing.

This week we’re speaking to the amazing Marina who founded a Boomerang Bag community on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. By way of background Boomerang Bags is not just about making actual bags as part of a borrow and bring back system, it’s about connecting communities, diverting waste (using cute-as-a-button, handmade boomerang bags rather than plastic ones), starting conversations about sustainability and most of all meeting like-minded people who enjoy having some fun.

We speak to Marina about growing up in England, and how her upbringing set her on a path of being interested in sustainability. We talk about how she came to set up a Boomerang Bag community and how together they have made more than 5,000 bags – and in doing so diverted waste from landfill … and made lots of firm friends.

Not one to rest on her laurels, Marina and her team are branching out to include a beautiful range of bunting (apologies we ran out of time to cover this in the podcast …). We find out how she met her husband and business partner and how they have grown a hugely successful business in under 10 years.
