This week Kym and Judith speak to Rochelle, who is combining her passion for horses, long distance trekking and women’s history by re-enacting rides made by early Australian pioneering women. IN total Rochelle is planning six rides, and in her first ride this remarkable woman re-enacted Sarah Musgrave’s ride from the 1830s, when Sarah rode from Young to Yass - a distance of 150kms (or about 90 miles) - to get married. 

Through Rochelle’s story we find out about the courage, inspiration and resilience of our pioneering women.

Labelled the naughty kid at school, it wasn’t until Maggie was in her late 20s that she was diagnosed with learning difficulties and finally understood the reason behind some of her issues.

This week Kym and Judith speak to the talented Wendy Frew, who is an award-winning journalist, published author and a fellow podcaster. Wendy has worked at The Australian Financial Review, The Sydney Morning Herald, Reuters and the BBC. 

We chat with Wendy about the importance of reading, the state of Australian newspapers, and what it’s really like being a journalist. We also find out about her book, ‘Leane Times’, which is based on Wendy’s incredible family who left Cornwall in the 1800s and became the poster family for World War One recruitment.

For women in their 20s swiping left or right, hook ups, friends with benefits, dating apps and other aspects of online dating seems to be the norm. But venturing into the online dating scene for women who are over 40 is a minefield. Ever heard of a high functioning introvert? Either had we until we met Clare, award-winning designer, educator, mother of three and founder of The Little Design Corner (for those non-designers among us, TLDC provides online courses and resources for interior designers, decorators and stylists). 

While Clare may describe herself as an introvert she has been putting herself out there since playing the Oboe as a child. From a musical background she chose a corporate career but gave that away in 2012 to pursue her passion for interior design. Since then, Clare has gone from working for free for friends to a seven-figure business. And along the way she has amassed a strong community of online followers in the design space who enjoy her daily advice and pieces of inspiration.

Through Clare’s story we learn that everything happens for a reason, why giving and sharing are gifts, and that focus and discipline can help you achieve your goals.

We talk about Boadicea, the Queen of the British Celtic Iceni tribe who led an uprising against the Roman Empire in CE 60; Olive Cotton who was a pioneer of modern photography in Australia; Jacinta Price who has worked for almost 20 years to create understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australia; and, Lou Anne who provides enormous help and support to the local community through her work with the Salvation Army.

When her marriage ended in 2000 Jill explored her creative side. She began painting and then turned her hand to making bold, statement jewellery pieces. Initially, these pieces were for friends but as her reputation grew her designs caught the attention of celebrities and fashionistas both in Australia and overseas.

Kym and Judith catch up with Jill this week and find out about her creative journey and how a couple of bold moves (including sending a pair of earrings to The Project’s Lisa Wilkinson) helped propel her jewellery business to the next level. Through Jill’s story we learn the importance of being brave and not being scared to take risks.

This week we speak to Leone – or Lol to her friends – who has known Kym since their 20s when they went to the same parties on the Gold Coast. Today, Lol is the CEO of The Buttery, a not-for-profit, charitable mental health organisation, and drug and alcohol rehab in Northern NSW. Lol has spent more than 30 years working in health, community services and disability.

Lol talks to Kym and Judith about growing up in the Western Suburbs of Sydney and how her early family life set her on a path of helping others and community service. We find out about her strong drive for change in mental health, the impact COVID has had on mental well-being and the importance of being connected – whether it’s volunteering, joining a dragon boat team or doing NIA (non-impact aerobics).

Importantly, Lol reminds us we need to believe in ourselves, worry less about what we look like and be kind to our mums.
