Dancing, Health and what they have in common.

Dancing has been a big part of culture since the beginning of time.

Although it is thought to be an art rarely does the main stream media or public see it as one of the greatest fitness choices you could make. Dancing adds to your physical and mental health.

I'm a little bias about the impact dance can have on your life since I've been doing it since the age of three. To me, it is a release of whatever negative ions I'm holding in, and I'm not the only one.

Classes and dance studios across America and the rest of the Globe offer different types of dance lessons based on the culture. This is largely for children through young adults which I think is a shame. Elderly people love to dance just as much if not more so as anyone and frankly it would help them stay limber and flexible if there were more opportunities for them.

People of all ages need physical activity to keep their body performing at its best. People also need a place to mentally dump negative emotions, thoughts, and energy. Dancing can provide both of these for any and everyone.

Whether you are in a wheel chair, have a prosthetic limb, are the age of one or are 90 years of age you can enjoy dancing. Like any exercise the enjoyment is a mental state just as much as it is a physical.

An exercise of any kind helps improve your over all health and outlook by helping:

You feel better about yourself for actively doing something.Your mind is able to clear out the negative.Your joints and ligaments stay limber.You keep your metabolism working at a high rate.Your overall weight stays within a healthy range.Breathing becomes easier.You are more able to participate in your everyday life and adventures.It triggers your pleasure senses.It's a confidence builder. Improves balance.

This list talks about all exercises and some of the things they offer. Dancing however, hits every single one of these criterias. It is an art but also an enjoyable exercise that allows you to look forward to staying in shape.

Look at a dancer: they are sculpted, poised and exude confidence. Not just professionals but any type of dancer. Look at an older couple dancing the polka or a one-year-old rocking it in their diaper, there is no lack of confidence there.

As we age our bodies develop different types of ailments depending on what we did to it when we were younger or what profession we have chosen. People become disheartened because they have to give up a lot of things due to a bad shoulder, knees etc.

When you are dancing for your health you don't need to give up anything. If you have bad shoulders, move with your legs. If you have bad knees, sit and use your upper body. Dancing is using your body, but not necessarily every part of your body at one time. Dance means to: move rhythmically to music. This then means you can be anyone, any age, and as long as you can move one part of your body, you can dance.

I mentioned briefly how dance can benefit the mind. This I can attest to personally. Growing up I had an incredible dance teacher, LaDonna Jimison. She was a mentor and leader along with being a tramendous dance teacher (the good ones always are).

Where this list contains many positive things, it lacks something important; heart and soul, of any kind. Now don't misunderstand me and assume I don't think you should strive for the things on this list. No, I'm only stating that there should be more to success than material wealth or power. After all, we have not mentioned anything that has an abstract value that would feed your soul or uplift you spiritually.

You can be the wealthiest person alive or have the greatest mind and yet have an emptiness or void if you are merely following the list above. Take, for example:

Or simply Leonardo, an Italian polymath whose areas of interest included invention, painting, sculpting, architecture, science, music, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology, astronomy, botany, writing, history, and cartography. 

The man who has been variously called the father of paleontology, technology, and architecture, and is widely considered one of the greatest painters of all time. Sometimes credited with the inventions of the parachute, helicopter, and tank, and whose genius epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal. 

Well, many people deem De Vinci to be the very image of success. And he very well could have been. But if you look closely at De Vinci's life, you notice the man was always striving for something bigger and better. Like there was a void, he could not fill with inventions, paintings, or anything else. 

People do not know to this day whether the man himself was a Christian although he painted the Last supper, The baptism of Christ, etc. making the point that a person from the outside and the success they seem to have is not always an accurate description of the truth that lies within.

Did Leonardo de Vinci see himself as being a success? A question we will never know of him, but it is one we can ask of ourselves.

I'm using this extreme example merely to get you to see the big picture. What does being successful look like to you? I know what you're thinking. "I would be a De Vinci any day of the week whether he had a void or not." But why when you don't need to?

Who Can Be Successful?

Whether you're wealthy, middle class, or poor in terms of today's society, you can be successful. It just all depends on your definition of success. You can have a large bank account, an expensive car, and a beautiful house, but are you happy? Is your family joyful? What is the account balance of your soul?

Success is merely a mindset each person has, and the fact is, we control our minds. I can live middle class with my kids truly happy and be successful. Drive an old beat up but paid for vehicle, have no bills, and that be my definition of success. 

How Does One Accomplish Success?

By giving back to your community and keeping yourself humble to others and their needs can all be measurements of success. Still, if all in life that matters is how much money you can accumulate over the years, no matter the cost to you or others, I will deem you unsuccessful. Or if you are putting all your thoughts JUST into the list above.

Now is the time for goal setting and figuring out what the best way is to finally achieve what you've had on your goal list.

This could be related to health, relationships, finances etc. Whatever your desired goal I'm going to give you realistic and obtainable ways in which to reach them.

Before we begin let's clarify a few things:

Dreaming is good, but a dream will remain just a dream if you don’t set a realistic deadline to achieve it. Whereas a dream with a deadline, now becomes a Goal, remember that.Objectives are part of a larger goal. Mini-steps I like to call them.And finally, Tasks are the little actions you take to achieve your objectives.

Goal Characteristics:

Goals are written: Any goal not written down is hope and hope is not a strategy.Goals are concrete and very specific.  Example being, “I will get home at an earlier time, so I can have dinner with my family and play with my children before they need to go to bed.”Goals are yours and no one else’s: For example, you can’t have a goal that forces someone to do something, like having your husband be more romantic. You can, however, have a goal for yourself to look more appealing, find ways that compliment him, have dinner waiting etc. These are YOUR goals that achieve something YOU want. Another and a simpler example would be, "I want to lose 10 lbs in three weeks." This is specific and has to do with YOU and YOUR goal.Goals are realistic: More often than not we set out to achieve goals with unrealistic expectations. If you set out to lose 80 pounds in 15 days, it’s not only improbable but also dangerous.

Goals have a deadline: “I will stop drinking pop,” is a great idea but without the specifics of a day or date, it's not really considered a goal.

The Process of Achieving Your Goals:

Don’t write down 50 things. Write down three to five in each functional area of your life.Establish a tracking or planning system. You can use a planner or a regular notebook. If you are an App person then I would suggest, My Habits. This App will break down your goals into manageable units.

Here is an example of the process:

I will stop drinking pop by March 1st of 2019 (a concrete and realistic goal):

Objective 1: I will research why pop is bad for me from two reliable resources.

Task 1: I will visit the library, download books or visit a site online by January 7th.

Task 2: Using this information I will look for an alternative drink.

Objective 2: I will look for deals or coupons and the easiest location to start buying the new drink. (If you want to replace pop with water, then you can research osmosis systems or filters.)

Task 1. Purchase the new drink. (osmosis or filter.)

Task 2: Take the remaining pop out of the house.

Objective 3: I choose a start date and make it a priority. 

Task 1: Look for a block of time where I can have the best start. A time when I am home and won't be tempted to buy a pop.

Task 2: I recruit an accountability partner.

Objective 4: Get going. Take the first drink and continue.

During your planning process, you carefully study a task, whether it be changing what you drink or losing weight, and break it down into pieces. Then research different ways of getting things done faster and more efficiently, seeking the best results possible. This is done through two different techniques.

Nosebleeds are common and can happen when there is an infection, constant probing, an injury occurs, or the air is extremely dry.

When an injury or infection occurs, the lining in the nose can easily rupture tiny local blood vessels which cause bleeding. In some instances, nosebleeds occur for no apparent reason.

No matter what has caused them, you can treat nosebleeds using natural ways. These don't work for everyone, but they might be a solution that you haven't thought of and something you can add to your journal of natural cures or remedies.

Home Type or Traditional Remedies

Putting ice or a cold washcloth on the back of your neck while leaning forward and lightly pinching the sides of the nose can often slow down or stop the bleeding. Tipping the head back will cause you to swallow your blood, so be sure to lean forward.Place a drop of lemon oil or juice at the end of a cotton ball and place in the bleeding nostril. As lemon is a natural styptic, it will help to staunch the flow of blood.Coconut oil rubbed right inside the nostril can help prevent nosebleeds from occurring by keeping your nose moistened.Bag Balm is another product you can rub on a cue tip and then the inside of the nose to prevent sores and or bleeding.

Aromatherapy

Homeopathy

Flower of Arnica

Arnica is great for a nosebleed that has been brought on by bruising or an injury. Arnica can be taken internally or externally.

If you are blowing constantly and violently, take phosphorus.

Phosphorus is a mineral that helps with cell communication and strengthens bones. If you are deficient in phosphorus you most likely have a deficiency in magnesium, zinc, and potassium. This deficiency can be cured by taking a vitamin containing all four but be careful, you don't want to take an amount greater than 200mg of phosphorus per day. This could cause diarrhea or the calcification of soft tissue and organs.

Flower Essence

A few drops of Rescue Remedy diluted in water and place in the nostril may encourage the healing process.Rescue Remedy can be bought as a liquid or as a cream. It is made from equal amounts of these five essences: cherry plum, for feelings of desperation; rockrose, to ease terror, fear, or panic; impatiens, to soothe irritability and agitation; clematis, to counteract the tendency to drift away from the present; and star of Bethlehem, to address the mental and physical symptoms of shock. Together, these flower essences make a safe mental sanctuary in which to recover. Carry Rescue Remedy with you for all emergencies, such as a shock, an accident, or an argument; or to take before a trying event, such as an. examination, court appearance, or operation.Make a treatment bottle of Rescue Remedy by adding 2 drops of each constituent flower remedy to a 1fl.oz. Eggs, Eggs, Eggs.

Although eggs are exceptional for your health they are one of those foods that are, "Hot then you're cold You're yes then you're no..." (Katie Perry 2008). Doctors have warned people against eating eggs and then they tell them their great. So which is it?

Eggs are one of the most nutritious foods out there. They're low in the calories and high in the protein. They also contain vitamins and trace minerals.

People into bodybuilding and elderly people should have at least one egg per day. In fact, we all should. With 6 g of protein per egg and 77 calories, they are a powerhouse when it comes to food.

Nutrients In Eggs

While the egg whites (albumin) contain a small portion of the nutrients, the majority comes from the yolk. With vitamins and minerals such as A, D, B6, B12, Selenium, and only 5 g. of fat, it doesn't take a genius to see eggs are a must in your daily diet.

On average one large egg contains:

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin): .4 micrograms or 9% of the RDA

"Vitamin B-12 affects every cell in your body because of its role in your circulatory system. Cobalamin helps you to make heme, the component of your red blood cells that allows them to supply every tissue in your body with oxygen. A lack of vitamin B-12 causes anemia, a condition that develops when your blood can no longer properly oxygenate your body.

Cobalamin also supports cardiovascular health by controlling the levels of homocysteine -- an amino acid -- in your bloodstream. People need to consume vitamin B2 every day because the body can only store small amounts, and supplies go down rapidly.

Vitamin A: 6% of the RDA

Preformed vitamin A occurs in meat, fish, and dairy produce.

Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid): 7% of the RDA

Do you ever get tired at work or school? Even when you've had enough rest it takes energy to keep your mind alert.

Our bodies were made to move, think, to breathe and in cold places, to stay warm. Without energy, you physically and mentally cannot do these things. Energy equals action. Also, growing takes energy along with your body's ability to repair itself when you get hurt.

With all of this energy talk, where does it come from, the energy I mean? You guessed it, food. All of our energy comes from the food we eat.

The Digestive System

Our bodies have the superhero ability to change the food we eat into a form or a source our body can use. One of the ways is through our digestive system. This system breaks down the food from the time it hits your lips. This being the case, it is so important to chew your food extremely well to give the digestive juices in your mouth time to work. Besides the juices, chewing breaks the food down into smaller pieces, making it easier for the food to be processed through the rest of your digestive system.

Digestion is helped when you get fresh air and exercise. I don't mean you should do a marathon and then sit right away to eat or eat and then get on the treadmill. It's better to have low impact shortly before and after your meals. Your stomach needs blood to digest your food and too much exercise can draw the blood away.

Another thing to consider is having regular mealtimes. Your digestive system will work better when you do, and you will also feel better. Starving yourself or going too long without a meal can make you crabby and result in low energy. Too much at one time can make you feel sluggish because your body must work extra hard to digest a larger amount. So, be kind to your body and eat regular, smaller portioned meals.

Certain emotions play havoc on your digestive system. These types of emotions anger, fear, or excitement during meal time can cause your stomach to ache. Other emotions such as, happy, stable and feel good emotions will help and make mealtime a more pleasant experience.

Protein

Hair, skin, and nails, along with muscles, your brain, and internal organs are largely made of protein. Therefore, it's extremely important to get enough protein in your diet. Your body can not repair itself or work at full capacity without enough protein.

Every day you should be drinking milk or consuming some other food high in protein. Your body does not store protein, so a daily amount is required to stay healthy and on track.

Breakfast is especially important to get your intake of protein since that sets the tone and determines your energy level throughout the rest of the day. Giving your brain a head start will help you focus which then enables you to work more efficiently.

Everyone has a holiday favorite when it comes to food. Dessert aside, this cream peas and carrots happen to be mine. Is it healthy? Well, that all depends on what you call healthy :). Since I make it with peas and carrots from our garden and cream from our cow I am deeming it healthy haha. You can too, just be sure to buy fresh ingredients.

Cream Peas and Carrots

Ingredients

2 cups frozen peas and cut carrots. If you don't have fresh or frozen from your garden you can use 1(16 ounces) package frozen peas and carrots.

3 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons flour

1⁄8 teaspoon salt

1⁄8 teaspoon white pepper (optional)

1/3 cup heavy cream

Water, about 2/3 cup.

Directions

Take a medium saucepan and combine your peas and carrots and enough water, about 2/3 cup, salt, and pepper if desired. Steam through on high heat (a boil) to soften the vegetables. Not to the point of mushy but where they are still a little firm.

Once desired texture is met, stir in your butter.

In a separate small bowl, whisk together the flour and cream.

After a paste has been made, stir it slowly into the peas and carrots.

Cook over medium-high heat until it's thick and bubbly, about five minutes.

That's it! You now have a family favorite that you can easily make for the holidays or any time during the year. Serve it over mashed potatoes, as its own dish, or use it as a gravy for your meat. No matter how you try it you won't be disappointed in the taste.

Rosemary is good for your health whether it's fresh dried or used as an oil.

Vitamins A and C are present in the plant. Also, some minerals include folate, zinc, riboflavin, thiamin, copper, magnesium, phosphorus and iron.

You can grow rosemary year-round. Just place it in a pot and keep inside when temperatures get to be freezing or below outside. It likes to stay dry almost like a cactus so don't give it too much love or it might not last.

Dictionary.com describes rosemary as being an evergreen shrub, Rosmarinus officinalis, of the mint family, native to the Mediterranean region,   having leathery, narrow leaves and pale-blue, bell-shaped flowers, used as a seasoning and in perfumery and medicine: a traditional symbol of remembrance.

Here is a little more history about the herb.

"Rosemary's name is rooted in legend. The story goes that during her flight from Egypt, the Virgin Mary draped her blue cloak on a Rosemary bush. She then laid a white flower on top of the cloak. That night, the flower turned blue and the bush was thereafter known as the 'rose of Mary'. Greeks, who wove Rosemary wreaths into their hair, believed Rosemary strengthened the brain and enhanced memory. It was also known as a symbol of fidelity. In the Middle Ages, Rosemary was used medicinally and as a condiment for salted meats. In Europe, wedding parties burned Rosemary as incense. Judges burned it to protect against illness brought in by prisoners."

It is one of the most diverse herbs and helps with a number of problems and diseases. Here is my top ten list for the benefits of rosemary.

Boost Memory and Mental Focus. Add a few drops to your diffuser or place a couple of drops on a cloth and breathe in.

Helps with Stress and Fights Anxiety. The calming scent soothes the mind and relieves tense muscles. Again, use your diffuser.

Relieves Headaches. Rosemary reduces swelling, so it will relieve a headache and minor migraines. Simply rub a drop or two of rosemary oil mixed with 1 Tablespoon of carrier oil to each temple.

Helps Clear your Nasal passage. Add a few drops to a hot bath and breathe deeply as the steam rises.

Stimulates Hair Growth. This happens by adding a 1/4 cup of rosemary to 3 cups of hot water and let sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Let cool and pour over your scalp a few times a week. The rosemary will stimulate blood flow and promote hair follicle growth by letting more nutrients in.

Helps Inflammation and Pain. This can include arthritic pain, gout, stiff neck, and menstrual cramps. Simply warm 1-2 Tablespoons of a carrier oil such as olive oil in the microwave for a few seconds and add a few drops of rosemary. Rub on the affected area for 3-5 minutes multiple times a day until the pain has been relieved. You can keep a bowl with the oil mixture handy and rub vigorously between the hands to warm if you don't have a place to heat it. Be careful not to burn yourself when using a microwave.

Boosts the Immune System; say no to diseases and germs. With the phytochemicals, this herb can prevent or block cancer and reduce swelling. Drink a rosemary tea for these benefits and to stay healthy by keeping colds and coughs at bay.

Helps with Respiratory Problems. Rosemary kills bacteria and stops spasms. This prevents flu bugs, colds, and infections. Make a rub the same as in number six and rub on your chest a few times a day.
