  • Train Up A Child

Proverbs 22:6 says “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it” a sentiment echoed in Ephesians 6:4 “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” It’s clear that setting a godly direction for children adds something to their lives. Join us to hear what God’s word has to say.

    WHY WE DON'T BAPTIZE BABIES

    1.  Because they cannot believe.  Mark 16:16
    2.  Because they cannot repent.  Acts 2:38
    3.  Because they cannot confess. Romans 10:9
    4.  Because they don’t have a conscience. 1Peter 3:21
    5.  Because they are safe.  2 Samuel 12:23

People were also bringing babies to Jesus to have him touch them.  When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them.   But Jesus called the children to him and said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.  I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."  Luke 18:15

The disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"  He called a little child and had him stand among them.   And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.  Matthew 18:1-3

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up.  1Peter 5:6
O my people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth.  What we have heard and known, what our fathers have told us.  We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done.   He established the law in Israel, which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children,  so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.  Psalm 78:1-6

  • Learning to Be Content (Ten Values That Build Strong Families #10)

Are you satisfied or wishing you had what your neighbors, friends or relatives have? There are times when we look around and wish we had that car, that job, that outfit, that house, etc. Perhaps that is just about being human, but those uncontrolled thoughts can take over and inspire us to do unholy things. God knew that about humans and his tenth commandment in Exodus 20:16 speaks against wanting things that others have. "You shall not covet...anything that belongs to your neighbor." What are some of the effects of those uncontrolled desires?

"You shall not covet...anything that belongs to your neighbor."  Exodus 20:16

"COVET":  The Uncontrolled desire to acquire

    I.  THE EFFECT OF ALWAYS WANTING MORE

     1.  FATIGUE

"Do not wear yourself out to be rich; have the wisdom to show restraint."  Proverbs 23:4

    2.  DEBT

"The more money you have, the more money you spend..."  Ecclesiastes 5:11

    3.  WORRY

"A working man ... can get a good night's sleep.  But the rich man has so much that he stays awake worrying."   Ecclesiastes 5:12

    4.  CONFLICT

"What causes fights and quarrels among you?  Don't they come from the desires that battle with you?"  James 4:1

    5.  DISSATISFACTION

"You will never be satisfied if you long to be rich.  You will never get all you want."  Ecclesiastes 5:10

"It's foolish to think wealth brings happiness!"  (Paul) "I have learned the secret of being content... whether living in plenty or in want."  Philippians 4:12

    II.  HOW TO LEARN CONTENTMENT

     1.  RESIST COMPARING MYSELF TO OTHERS

"We do not dare classify or compare ourselves ... it is not wise."       2 Corinthians 10:12

    2.  REJOICE IN WHAT I DO HAVE

"If God gives a man wealth and property .. he should be grateful and enjoy what he has... it is a gift from God."  Ecclesiastes 5:19

    3.  RELEASE WHAT I HAVE TO HELP OTHERS

"Tell those who are rich, not to be proud and not to trust in their money which will soon be gone.  Tell them to use their money to do good ... to give happily to those in need, always with others whatever God has given them.  By doing this they will be storing up real treasure for themselves in heaven -- it is the only safe investment for eternity!"  1Timothy 6:17-19

    4.  REFOCUS ON WHAT’S GOING TO LAST

"We fix our attention, not on the things that are seen, but on things that are unseen.  What can be seen lasts only for a time, but what cannot be seen lasts forever."  2 Corinthians 4:18

“A man’s true life is not made up of the things he owns, no matter how rich he may be.”  Luke 12:15

  • Telling the Truth (Ten Values that Build Strong Families #9)

Exodus 20:16 says “Do not testify falsely against your neighbor.” Fact: Humans don’t always tell the truth. Do we know how to tell the truth? Of course we do, but sometimes the truth escapes us unfortunately. How can we tell the truth?

    Notes:
Exodus 20:16 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor."

    •   Survey Said 66% Of Americans Say It's Not Wrong To Tell Lies.
    •  Only 31% Agreed W/ Statement, "Honesty Is The Best Policy."
    •  Dr. Leonard Keeler (Inventor Of Lie Detector) Has Tested 25K People & Has Come To Conclusion Human Beings Are Basically Deceptive.  How Can We Be Honest In A Dishonest World?

     HOW TO TELL THE TRUTH

    1.  TELL THE TRUTH COMPLETELY
Proverbs 10:10  "Someone who holds back the truth [Concealing] causes trouble."
What Kind Of Trouble?  Employer / Teacher / Spouse...
Couples That Hold Back Truth and Sweep Issues Under Carpet Are Headed For Trouble.

Proverbs 28:23  "In the end people appreciate frankness more than flattery."
Telling the truth may be unpleasant at first.  For instance if an employee is goofing off on the job and you have to reprimand or fire them, they may not appreciate what happens, but it may help the to c their character in the long run.

     2.  TELL THE TRUTH CONSISTENTLY

Being Honest 80% Of The Time Is NOT Integrity

Proverbs 11:3  "People who can't be trusted are destroyed by their own dishonesty."
Lying Destroys relationships.  Every relationship is built on one thing-- TRUST!
If you destroy trust, you destroy the relationship.

Proverbs 13:7  "Reliable communication permits progress."
When a couple has dealt with the same old problems for years and there's no progress, it's because someone is not being honest.

    3.  TELL THE TRUTH LOVINGLY
Ephesians 4:15 "Speak the truth in a spirit of LOVE."  DON'T use the truth as a club!

    REMEMBER TWO THINGS:
      1. People change faster when you speak the truth in a spirit of love.
      2.  People perceive truth without love as an attack.  It doesn't matter whether what you’re saying is the truth, they are certain to resist it.

Old Arab Proverb:  when you shoot an arrow dip it in honey first.

    4.  TELL THE TRUTH TACTFULLY – There is a right time, place or way to have the conversation. It’s not at midnight right before you go to bed!  Remember Proverbs 12:18 "Thoughtless words can wound as deeply as any sword.  But wisely spoken words can heal."

You have an option in how you use your words:  you can hurt or heal; develop or destroy.  Words have Power.  Remember the rhyme "Sticks & Stones..."

Proverbs 16:23 "Intelligent people THINK before they SPEAK."

     WHY DO WE LIE?

FIVE TYPES OF LIES / MOTIVES:
     1. THE CRUEL LIE
this is the kind of lie that is intentionally destructive / malicious / revenge.
Somebody hurt you so you make up a lie about them.
The Sadducees did this to Jesus. They called him a “drunkard who associates with sinners!”

Motive?  Jealousy, revenge, hurt, anger, hate, resentment.

      2.  THE COWARDLY LIE
The cowardly lie is usually told to escape consequences or avoid punishment. "MY DOG ATE MY HOMEWORK."   Adam in the Garden of Eden used this tact because he was afraid.

    3.  THE CONCEITED LIE
The conceited lie is usually told in order to impress.   Bragging and lying are cousins.
    Motive?  Insecurity. What comes off
