October 20, 2024 - The love of money is unique in Scripture as the premier obstacle to Christian discipleship. More than any other commodity, James says, the desire for money leads hearts astray, specifically to hoard wealth, to defraud the vulnerable to obtain it, and to seek after a life of luxury and self-indulgence. God has given the church the ability to generate wealth (Deut. 8:18), but Scripture has much to say in this passage about how we think about wealth, how we accumulate wealth, and how we spend it. To those who do not embody the Kingdom of God in the realm of money, James issues a damning indictment.
