Colossians 3:15 tells us, "Let the peace of God rule in your hearts." Can peace be a commanding force?  Often we view peace  as a vague, calm feeling, dictated in great part by our surroundings. Yet Paul tells us that peace itself should rule our hearts. How do we allow this peace to take dominion in our lives? And how does God's peace differ from that which the world brings?

Both Isaiah and Jesus described the excavation necessary to prepare the way for salvation: filling in valleys of self-pity and flattening the mountains of pride, self protection and defensiveness. We do this preparatory work through creating an environment of brokenness that prepares our hearts to find salvation.

The leper’s revelation was simple: if we stay here, we will die. With nothing but a burning of promise in their hearts, they embarked on one of history’s greatest miracles and brought deliverance to an entire nation. Like the four lepers, we must recognize that the smallest battles we face can represent the greatest pivots for God’s kingdom, if only we’re willing to step out in faith.

Disappointment comes from carefully formulated expectations gone awry.  Whenever we lose our sensitivity and dependence on God’s leading, pride begins to blind and distract us from His purpose. Every time, we must be willing to retrace our steps, cleanse our motives of selfish ambition and return to the path of His command.

Baptism represents a burial of a dead man—not a drowning session for a living being. How do we know if the carnal man within us is truly dead? Defensiveness and excuse-making represent sure proof of the sinful nature alive within us. Conversely, faith toward God expressing itself in love for our brethren is John’s indicator that we have passed out of death and into life.

If life’s struggles and disappointments leave us believing that God is not fair, we must look again at what truly is fair. Since we are born into a world cursed through man’s disobedience, and since we ourselves have also participated in this sin of Adam, the curse of death is what we deserve. When we realize this, we can understand that our suffering is an opportunity to bring God glory.

Through suffering, God grants us the opportunity to participate in a cosmic struggle between love and hate. The battle oftentimes is waged in our minds between self-pity and grace, short-sightedness and eternal glory. Can we endure our momentary afflictions,  believing there is an eternal weight of glory being revealed through our struggle?
