As David fled from a coup, a rebel pelted him with rocks and abuse. David was urged to kill him, but insisted that it was not the time for a sword. Often we perceive obvious needs that others seem to ignore. Yet when we submit to the perspective of wisdom, we lay aside our individual swords to build the kingdom together.

Our perception is illuminated by our light source. We are responsible for choosing the source we will put our confidence in, whether the narrative of the Creator of the universe or the viewpoint of suspicion, cynicism, and unbelief. The power of God is manifested when we choose to see through the eyes of faith.

Although more diametrically opposed than ever before, the two sides of the American political aisle are actually unified with a common vision. Both look to the state as the solution to society’s breakdown. The Christianizing of the state, however, is not Christianity. Instead, our only hope as Christians is to make an exodus from the confusion of Babylon.

The following message comes from our Virginia community, ministered by Brother Evan Birdsong. He elucidates a struggle common to all—a longing for companionship, conflicting with avoidance of confrontation.

Ancient Israel faced an antagonistic, hostile culture, but division posed the greatest threat. A perspective of preservation, holding to the way things always were, clashed with a mentality that sought change for change’s sake. God sent the prophet Elijah to preach repentance, reconciliation, and the humility that would transform slaves into sons.

The issue of peace pivots on the question of control. Worldly peace is when we feel in control; God’s peace is counter-intuitive to the world’s: it comes through humbly casting our anxieties upon the Lord. Although our feelings and anxieties are real, we can access the power to overcome when we choose to obey God’s word with faith.

In today’s world, liberty from authoritarianism is often mistaken for freedom from restraint. Humans naturally accept authority only when seeking safety or help in achieving a goal. Our repugnance toward authority stems from suspicion and mistrust. However, repentance shifts our perspective on trustworthiness. Yet we must come to recognize that submission to Jesus leads to true liberty, the freedom from the fear of death.

God is one. Because of His oneness and wholeness, He requires His people to walk before Him and be tamim—blameless, whole, complete. A veil covered our faces when we encountered the God of the Old Testament, but that veil is removed in Jesus, who is the image of the invisible God. Through Jesus we see God’s essential nature, which is merciful love.

Living a Christian life is marked by active verbs: it requires discipline, renunciation, and even hardship. The Spirit lives on prayer, which connects us to God’s power and service. Faith without works of practical service is a corpse. But God has given us the weapons of active warfare so we can fight and resist our adversary.

God placed man in a garden where there was wholeness and relationship with Him. When man violated God’s order and chose to decide good and evil for himself, his disobedience began the process of death and disintegration. History has been a series of man’s failed attempts to return to the garden apart from the Creator. But God desires to restore man by building us into the temple that is His corporate body.

The longing for acceptance is a universal human need. God welcomes all the rejects and misfits of the world to come into His house, His family. But we must each come as a little child, with nothing of our ego intact. We must recognize that neither our gifts, assets or performance gain us approval, but only complete brokenness and dependence on the Father.
