Leviticus 18 is one of those chapters that can be embarrassing to read out loud if you're not alone. In this sermon we're going to read it out loud, all together. This is a chapter filled with prohibitions concerning sex, commands for the good of God's people, and most importantly for our fellowship with him. In many ways this chapter is straightforward. But there is nevertheless some difficult interpretive work to do in order to discern precisely what God requires of us under the new covenant and how we can obey when Israel didn't. Christians talk about blood all the time. We even sing about it. No one else does that. Why do we do that? We know that Jesus' blood is precious, but why? We are starting into the second half of the book of Leviticus. So far, blood has been strangely both dangerous, separating us from God, and life-giving, bringing us to God.
