Missionaries serve in settings that are often quite different from their homeland in terms of worldview and culture. They must learn to communicate the gospel to their target audience in ways that are both biblical and effective. It seems, however, that more and more we too are living in a society which is quickly changing its social and moral values. It is easy to be fearful or frustrated with that. Yet, we are called to proclaim the hope of Christ in the time and place where God has put us. The Apostle Paul's encounter with Greek philosophers in Athens, recorded in Acts 17, provides helpful guidelines for missionaries who must communicate truth in challenging environments. But the account can also be helpful for us both in highlighting the crucial need to proclaim Christ and in modeling effective communication to an audience with very different perspectives than ours. Leviticus 26 | An Invitation to Life with God | Trent Hunter

We're familiar with the line, "they lived happily ever after." It marks a good end to a good story. That is not how the book of Leviticus ends because Leviticus is not the end of the story. But it does point us there. Leviticus 26 presents us with a series of blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. Most of the chapter is cursings, an ominous note of expectation that this covenant will not bring about the intimacy of life with the Lord that we have longed for since the garden.

If the lights are on, someone might be home. If the lights are on and food is on the table, then someone is definitely home. Leviticus chapter 24 is the heart of the book of Leviticus and the goal toward which the entire book has been leading us. Here we find a picture of the light of God's lamp shining on twelve loaves of bread continually in God's holy place. In this unassuming picture we have an astounding invitation.

You can learn a lot about a person by looking at their calendar, who they are with, how they spend their time, etc. The same is true for groups and nations. A nation's national calendar, with its special occasions and holidays, tells a story. Special occasions in our own country such as July 4, Thanksgiving, and Memorial Day, remind us where we have been as a nation and who we are as a people. Israel's calendar did the same. In this sermon we consider the various feasts that Israel participated in and what these have to do with our life together as the church.
