“In this portion of the Sermon on the Mount; the Lord Jesus calls us to keep our motives for righteous practices in check, particularity with respect to giving to the needy, and so not risk losing our reward from the Father”

As we reach the end of 1 Chronicles and of David’s life we see the beauty of joyful, generous, freewill, giving to God’s Kingdom. In an age of selfishness and materialism how are we going to imitate such giving? This Sunday we will see what freewill giving is and what motivates it.

In this sermon we rejoin our journey through Chronicles. We will see King David’s brilliance as an administrator who brought more structure to Temple worship and Israel as a nation. From his example we will learn the importance of structure for our lives and the church.

In our text, the Lord calls us to lay aside our rights where wisdom permits, for the sake of his kingdom, thus truly being salt and light of the world.

In legalism, people often narrow the law of God so that they can satisfy themselves that they are obedient while living immorally. In this section of the sermon on the mount, the Lord looks at how the command to not swear falsely has been abused to cover evil instead of preventing it.

In the life of every church there comes a time where the church needs to shape its culture and ethos. In our text, the church at Antioch chooses to be a missionary sending church—sacrificing for the advancement of the kingdom. In this sermon we will be challenged as a church to follow the example of this holy church and its attitude.

In Antioch, this newly formed Gentile and Jewish church is given a new name by the world around them—the Christians. Who were these Christians? What were they hoping to achieve?
