Silencing Women through Diagnoses: Female Hysteria and Psychiatric “Help” in History by Wenshu

(Submitted for the 6th Annual New York Times Student Podcast Contest)

In psychiatric history, women have been silenced over and over. Because of the not-so-hidden misogyny in not only men, but society as a whole, the pain of women was often overlooked. I’ll be exploring the dehumanization and misdiagnoses/mistreatment of women that were deemed “insane” by doctors in the 18th to 20th century: lobotomies, psychiatric wards, and hysteria.
