It was bound to happen. Shelby and Amy are obsessed with cheerleading, so when the Netflix docuseries America's Sweethearts about the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders came out, it had to be discussed. Check out our take on it and a little herstory about cheerleading.
Due to real life getting in the way, we don't have a new episode this week, BUT we'll be back next Monday!!! A million apologies.
Today, we're making Herstory with Kristy Whitford, an entrepreneur in the luxury and hospitality business for over 20 years. She has an impressive background, including working at the exclusive Beverly Hills Hotel. Kristy recently started her own company - The Hotel Club - where she offers her talents as a luxury consultant for hotels and businesses. If you are in the service industry or addicted to spa treatments, Kristy spills the tea on behind-the-scenes info and products to make your skin glow.
Starp on your patent leather because today, we're talking about tap dancers. Shelby discusses Ludie Jones, a dancer who was part of the Harlem Renaissance movement. Amy educates us on Jeni LeGon, one of the first African-American women to establish a solo career in tap dance.
Is it weird to make smut specifically for soldiers? Perhaps. But they were some pretty and talented ladies, so let's get into it. Amy discusses the ultimate pin-up of all time, Betty Grable. You've seen her iconic picture, even if you have no idea who she is. Shelby discusses a lesser-known lady, Cleo Moore, who acted in some pretty epic B movies.
Today, Shelby and Amy tackle the world of handiwork. First, they share a household handy task in which they are proficient. (Amy's is quite impressive.) Next, Amy covers the Ladies Bridge - the Waterloo Bridge, built mostly by women during WWII. Shelby talks about Lillian Baumbach, the first woman to acquire a Master Plumber's license in 1951.
Shelby is alone again, and she has chosen to utilize this time to discuss The American Plan: America's Forgotten Mass Imprisonment of Women Believed to be Sexually Immoral. Yup, it was a REAL thing. Google it - but listen to this episode first!
For the first time in Herstory herstory, we're doing a sequel with Girl Crushes! Amy discusses the fiery red-headed actress Rebecca Wisocky. Shelby continues her obsession with one of the stars of The Other Two, Heléne Yorke.
Shelby sits down with Radio and TV Host, Capri Cafaro, to discuss her diverse and eclectic life. She has truly done it all, from public service, to radio, to TV, and beyond! Her new travel and history series, America the Bountiful, is currently on Public TV nationwide - check your local listings.
Houston - We do NOT have a problem. To celebrate the eclipse, Shelby and Amy explore the world of lady flight controllers. Amy discusses mechanical engineer and first woman to be chief flight director at NASA, Holly Ridings. Shelby talks about Marianne Dyson, a trailblazer in space exploration, writing, and advocacy.
