Dear Parents,

We’re going to have a great upcoming week. Below is a short description of what’s coming up and important links and/or announcements:

Reader’s Workshop

We will be starting a unit in fiction books on getting to know and understand characters. This will lead us to a Deep Study of Character Unit which we will study in February and March.

Writer’s Workshop

We will be doing a short unit tying in with our Reading Unit. This Unit will begin our study of literary essays where we will explore theme or characters.

Math

Math Answers and Help Here

We will continue our unit on Arithmetic in Base 10. Our focus this week and next will be on multiplying and dividing decimals.

*Note- There are several tests coming up in math (some in our class and some for the district). More information on these tests is on the podcast. There should not be extra stress associated with these tests. There are just a lot because of the district’s timing with their

History

We will be starting a unit on Ancient Greece!

We will continue the study of the ancient Israelites and we will work on our chicken mummies. We will have a test on the Israelites on Thurs, Dec 18.

We will finish up our study of the different body systems in anticipation of a final assessment on Wed, Dec 17.

We will shift our focus to narrative nonfiction (biographies) next week. We will visit the library again and study the ways nonfiction teaches us about characters.

Writer’s Workshop

The kids will finish up the powerful personal narrative they have been working on turn it in. They will start a new powerful personal narrative that will be due on Thurs, Dec 19.

Math

Math Answers and Help Here

We will be finishing up our unit on Dividing Fractions with fractions in geometric situations. We will review this unit on Thursday and have an end of unit test on Fri, Dec 13.

History

We will continue the study of the ancient Israelites that started yesterday and we will work on our chicken mummies. We will have a test on the Israelites on Thurs, Dec 18.

The kids will learn about reading different for different purposes while reading nonfiction texts.

The kids will be assessing their own powerful personal narratives and making goals on how to improve.

We will continue our study of dividing fractions using diagrams to help build our understanding of what division really is.

History

The kids will continue working on their pyramid project. They are building websites, making videos, and/or constructing social media campaigns. They can bring phones/tablets to school on Monday to work on their project.

We’re going to have a great upcoming week. Below is a short description of what’s coming up and important links and/or announcements:

Reader’s Workshop

Our introduction to nonfiction continues where the kids will be studying text features, main ideas, responding to what you are learning, and writing about reading. There will be a short nonfiction quiz sometime next week. Also, this week or next there will be a grade added based on the work students are doing at home in their reader’s notebooks for their fiction reading.

Writer’s Workshop

We wrapped up our opinion unit and spend from now until Winter Break on our first 6th grade unit of the year: Powerful Personal Narrative. We will get started next week by writing furiously and thinking of moments that really matter.

Math

Math Answers and Help Here

We wrapped up our unit on Unit Rates and Percentages (though they will still see problems like this throughout the year) and we will move on to a unit on the division of fractions. Students will be modeling the division of fractions. Expect to hear words like “tape diagram, dividend, divisor, and quotient” throughout the next few weeks.

History

The kids will continue working on their pyramid project. Next week students are writing a persuasive speech to convince me to build their pyramid and deciding how to present their idea (website, social media campaign, video).

Science
