Reader’s Workshop

They will continue to read nonfiction books and we will take the week to figure out main ideas. The kids will be getting nonfiction books from the library to support their reading for the week. At home, they will continue reading fiction books they choose appropriately. As a reminder, students will get a grade in reading for filling out their reading log regularly.

Writer’s Workshop

We will continue a unit on writing information books. The kids will start on a new chapter book that teaches.

The next few weeks will be dedicated to in Introduction of Ratios. Here is a quick rundown of what we will be studying. Next week we will finish our unit, complete a review packet and take an end of unit test on Thursday.

History

The kids will continue our study of Ancient Egypt. The kids will build background knowledge and study vocabulary. They will study how Ancient Egyptian society was organized. They will grade themselves on how well they have completed their work so far.

Science

The kids will work with Mr. Nelson in science lab. We will use our science workbook to start a unit on human body systems. Optional Science Fair Information.

The next few weeks will be dedicated to in Introduction of Ratios. Here is a quick rundown of what we will be studying. Next week we will take a quiz on Monday on comparing ratios and using ratio tables (Ratios Work #8-12). Then we will be studying part-whole ratio relationships.

History

The kids will continue our study of Ancient Egypt. The kids will build background knowledge and study vocabulary. They will make and study hieroglyphics and look at how Ancient Egyptian society was organized. They will grade themselves on how well they have completed their work so far.

Science

The kids will work with Mr. Nelson in science lab. We will use our science workbook to start a unit on human body systems. Optional Science Fair Information.

The kids will be getting nonfiction books from the library to support their reading for the week. At home, they will continue reading fiction books they choose appropriately.

Writer’s Workshop

We will start a new unit on writing information books. We will discuss the qualities that make for great information writing and the kids will write an information book on a topic of their choice.

The next few weeks will be dedicated to in Introduction of Ratios. Here is a quick rundown of what we will be studying. Next week we will focus on modeling with ratio tables as opposed to double number lines. We will also begin to compare ratios and discuss what it means to find a unit price.

History

The kids will begin our study of Ancient Egypt. The kids will build background knowledge and study vocabulary. They will study the geography of Ancient Egypt and the Nile River and look at hieroglyphics.

Next week the kids will study their own reading habits as well as studying more details about characters and growing ideas about their books. They will make goals for how to be a better reader and learn to grow ideas about their characters.

Writer’s Workshop

The kids will finish revising and publishing their persuasive speech. They will also present their speech in front of the class on Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday.

The next few weeks will be dedicated to in Introduction of Ratios. Here is a quick rundown of what we will be studying. Next week we will focus on modeling Ratios in double number lines. The kids will have a homework quiz on modeling double number lines on Thursday.

History

The kids will continue studying Ancient Mesopotamia and specifically focus patterns of how empires rise and fall as we look into the Ancient Assyrian and Chaledean Empires.

Science

The kids will work with Mr. Nelson in science lab and learn about expectations for in-person science lab learning. We will use our science workbook to start a unit on human body systems. We will look at the respiratory system.

The kids will continue studying Ancient Mesopotamia and specifically focus on the rules societies enact starting with Hammurabi’s Code. We will also study patterns of how empires rise and fall as we look into the Ancient Assyrian and Chaledean Empires.

The kids will continue to improve their opinion writing as we practice writing reviews. We will revise the writing by practice hooks, providing more convincing reasons, and add quotes.

The kids will continue finish reviewing fractions operations.We will review our last decimal unit and take a basic skills test covering what we’ve done over the last month.

History

We will start studying our first civilization (Ancient Mesopotamia).

We will continue our unit called “Making Reading a 10 out of 10”. We are reviewing and establishing systems to support reading and learning some basic strategies for thinking while reading fiction books.

Writer’s Workshop

Be sure to check in with your child about their small moment story. For an extra challenge ask your child to open up the rubric and together you can check and see if the writing met all the requirements. We will move on from small moments to Opinion writing next week and start by giving awards to items in a collection.

The kids will continue reviewing decimals, get feedback on their decimals quiz, and move on to studying fraction operations.

History

We will continue our study of early humans in particular, hunter gatherer societies and the students will work on their early human timelines. We will review for a short quiz on hunter gatherers on Friday. (We didn’t get to the quiz this week).

The kids will work with Mr. Nelson in science lab and we may start our first unit from our science textbook.

Reader’s Workshop

The kids will start their first full unit of reading fiction books. We’ll discuss choosing books, summarizing, and getting to know characters like a friend. Yesterday we finished A Long Walk to Water. It is a wonderful book with a great twist at the end. Be sure to ask your child about their thoughts on the book and the final small project they worked on for the book

Writer’s Workshop

This week the kids will be revising one of their stories by using a checklist, learning from the pros, and editing with some extra help on ways to use commas. We will have a small celebration of their writing on Thursday.

Math

This week students will finish up the first part of the unit we are working on. Currently we are studying the area and perimeter of rectangles while reviewing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers and decimals. We will have some review on Wednesday this week before a quiz on Thursday.

History

We will continue our study of early humans in particular, hunter gatherer societies and the students will work on their early human flipbooks. We will review for a short quiz on hunter gatherers on Friday.

Reader’s Workshop

We will be reading a novel all together: A Long Walk to Water. It is a wonderful book. I highly recommend it for students and parents. If you can read it alongside your it will be a fantastic experience.

Writer’s Workshop

This week the kids will be learning some new ways to revise their stories. We will use the moments they brainstormed over the last week to come up with story ideas. Today (August 28th) the kids will complete their first story. It is typed in google classroom.

This week students will begin our first unit. We will use geometric principles of perimeter and area to review some skills from 5th grade like adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers and fractions.

History

We will continue our study of early humans in particular, hunter gatherer societies and the students will work on their early human flipbooks.

Science

The kids will work with Mr. Nelson in science lab and we may start our first unit from our science textbook.
