Reader’s Workshop

This week we will start a unit on Dystopian Books. We will read Among the Hidden all together this week. Next week after kids will be reading their own Dystopian books and have an opportunity to read in book clubs. I have some Dystopian Books in my classroom. Our library Mrs. Rusmisel is trying to curate Dystopian Books for our school library. Here is a list of books that would be great to read during our Dystopian Unit for the next few weeks. The students tend to really enjoy this genre.

The kids will start a new unit on writing research-based information writing.

What happened to math class?

We will continue our Data Sets and Distributions Unit. This week we will focus on calculation measures of center like mean and median. We will also calculate the M.A.D. (Mean Absolute Deviation).

History

We will continue our study of Ancient Greece. The kids will research, answer, and debate the question: Was Alexander the Great really “great”?

Reader’s Workshop

The kids will review motifs, themes, and symbolism and we will have a quiz. They will also make a one-pager about motifs, themes, or symbolism in the books they are reading.

Writer’s Workshop

The kids will finish our journalism unit by making their own, personal digital newspaper. The kids will work with drawings, documents, and a website to put all their articles together. Their newspaper and articles will be published and available for you to see!

What happened to math class?

We will work on the first half of our Area and Surface Area (Geometry Unit). We will work on finding the area of parallelograms and triangles and take a homework quiz on Thursday.

History

We will start studying our next Ancient Civilization: Greece.The kids will have a check of their work on Monday and then read articles about Ancient Greece.

Science

The kids will work with Miss Stevens in science lab.

We will start studying our next Ancient Civilization: Greece.The kids will compare and contrast Athens and Sparta and study the wars between Greece and Persia.

What happened to math class?

We will continue our unit on Rational Numbers. We will study the coordinate plane the whole week and the kids will have their first homework quiz of this unit on Wednesday. The homework quiz takes questions directly from their homework. This quiz will go on trimester 3 grades.

History

The kids will finish studying Ancient China! We will study the ancient silk road, the Great Wall, and Terra Cotta Warriors.

Science

The kids will work with Miss Stevens in science lab and research endangered species in our class.

The kids will continue  our unit on Deep Study of Character. Next week we will look at how the setting affects characters and vice versa.We will have a quiz on Thursday which will be the last grade of trimester 2.

Writer’s Workshop

The kids will spend the week preparing for and eventually recording a podcast based on their literary essays and studies of character.

We will continue our unit on Rational Numbers. We will work on graphing, writing, and solving inequalities and the kids will have their first homework quiz of this unit on Tuesday. The homework quiz takes questions directly from their homework. This quiz will go on trimester 3 grades.

History

The kids will continue studying Ancient China! We will study the ancient silk road, the Great Wall, and Terra Cotta Warriors.

We will continue our expressions and equations unit. We will study the exponents using algebraic expressions and exponents. We will have an End of Unit Test on Friday. It will cover everything from this unit. We will have a dedicated review day on Thursday.

The kids will continue deeply studying a character of their choosing this week. We will work on a project all week where the kids will make resources for studying their character including a website dedicated to the character.

Writer’s Workshop

The kids will finish and publish their first of 3 literary essays. Then they will start thinking about and crafting their second literary essay. If you haven’t yet discussed their literary essay with them, please do. There is some great analysis happening in our class.

What happened to math class?

We will continue our expressions and equations unit. We will study the distributive property using algebraic expressions and exponents. We will have a Mid-Unit Test on Wednesday. It will cover everything we’ve done in this unit so far: solving equations, evaluating expressions, writing expressions using percentages, and the distributive property.

We continue our deep study of character unit. We will consider the pressures exerted on characters and take a quiz on what we’ve studied so far on Thursday.

Writer’s Workshop

The kids will begin our 6th grade writing unit: The Literary Essay. The kids will  use the planning documents from last week to begin to write an essay related to the texts they are reading.

What happened to math class?

We will continue our expressions and equations unit. We study algebraic expressions and how to interpret them.

Also, the kids will take a test that all 6th graders in the district take on Wednesday. This will be a review of many of the concepts we have studied so far this year. The results will not be a part of our gradebook.

History

The kids will continue the study of Ancient India, specifically, society and the caste system in Ancient India.

Science

The kids will work with Miss Stevens in science lab.
