Reader’s Workshop

This week we will start a unit on Dystopian Books. The kids will takes  quiz on Among the Hidden on Monday. They can use their notes and work from last week. This week kids will be reading their own Dystopian books and have an opportunity to read in book clubs. I have some Dystopian Books in my classroom. Our library Mrs. Rusmisel is trying to curate Dystopian Books for our school library. Here is a list of books that would be great to read during our Dystopian Unit for the next few weeks. The students tend to really enjoy this genre.

Writer’s Workshop

The kids will continue working on a research-based information essay about teen activism. Students will prepare and write their essays.

What happened to math class?

We will continue our Data Sets and Distributions Unit. This week we will focus on calculating measures of spread using a 5-number summary and making box and whisker plots. Tuesday will be a mid-unit assessment covering lessons 1-14.

History

We will continue our study of Ancient Greece. The kids will debate the question: Was Alexander the Great really “great”? Students will also begin a study of Greek Gods and Mythology.

Science

Reader’s Workshop

This week we will start a unit on Dystopian Books. We will read Among the Hidden all together this week. Next week after kids will be reading their own Dystopian books and have an opportunity to read in book clubs. I have some Dystopian Books in my classroom. Our library Mrs. Rusmisel is trying to curate Dystopian Books for our school library. Here is a list of books that would be great to read during our Dystopian Unit for the next few weeks. What happened to math class?

We will continue our Data Sets and Distributions Unit. This week we will focus on calculation measures of center like mean and median. We will also calculate the M.A.D. (Mean Absolute Deviation).

We will continue our study of Ancient Greece. The kids will research, answer, and debate the question: Was Alexander the Great really “great”?

Reader’s Workshop

The kids will review motifs, themes, and symbolism and we will have a quiz. They will also make a one-pager about motifs, themes, or symbolism in the books they are reading.

Writer’s Workshop

The kids will finish our journalism unit by making their own, personal digital newspaper. The kids will work with drawings, documents, and a website to put all their articles together. Their newspaper and articles will be published and available for you to see!

We will work on the first half of our Area and Surface Area (Geometry Unit). We will work on finding the area of parallelograms and triangles and take a homework quiz on Thursday.

History

We will start studying our next Ancient Civilization: Greece.The kids will have a check of their work on Monday and then read articles about Ancient Greece.

We will continue our unit on Rational Numbers. We will study the coordinate plane the whole week and the kids will have their first homework quiz of this unit on Wednesday. The homework quiz takes questions directly from their homework. This quiz will go on trimester 3 grades.

History

The kids will finish studying Ancient China! We will study the ancient silk road, the Great Wall, and Terra Cotta Warriors.

Science

The kids will work with Miss Stevens in science lab and research endangered species in our class.

The kids will spend the week preparing for and eventually recording a podcast based on their literary essays and studies of character.

The kids will work on and publish their second of 3 literary essays. If you haven’t yet discussed their literary essays with them, please do. There is some great analysis happening in our class.

We will continue our expressions and equations unit. We will study the exponents using algebraic expressions and exponents. We will have an End of Unit Test on Friday. It will cover everything from this unit. We will have a dedicated review day on Thursday.

Writer’s Workshop

The kids will finish and publish their first of 3 literary essays. Then they will start thinking about and crafting their second literary essay. If you haven’t yet discussed their literary essay with them, please do. There is some great analysis happening in our class.

What happened to math class?

We will continue our expressions and equations unit. We will study the distributive property using algebraic expressions and exponents. We will have a Mid-Unit Test on Wednesday. It will cover everything we’ve done in this unit so far: solving equations, evaluating expressions, writing expressions using percentages, and the distributive property.
